21 Lessons I've Learned Since Turning 21

Turning 21 is something we all wait our whole lives for. We no longer worry about finding older individuals to buy us alcohol, and our license finally becomes vertical. We no longer have to worry about our fake getting taken at the bar, and we can finally legally drink the alcohol we have already been consuming for years. So what is the big deal actually? Honestly, one of the biggest accomplishments of turning 21 is surviving all the mistakes leading up to this day. Not only are you able to legally drink at 21, but you have officially peaked into adulthood, are likely halfway through your college career and still have so much more to learn. Being 21 can teach you some valuable life lessons.

  1. Not everyone you thought was meant to be a part of your life is meant to stay there.
  2. Change is inevitable, and it is OK.
  3. What has happened in your past, does not determine your future.
  4. Always, always, always, carry cash to the bar for drinks and especially cover fees.
  5. Dwelling on the small things is anything but beneficial.
  6. Beer before liquor, never sicker. Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.
  7. Time will tell all.
  8. Finding an important job is a lot more difficult.
  9. Perfection does not exist.
  10. Naps will become part of your daily routine.
  11. Loving yourself before learning to love someone else is extremely important.
  12. There will be people you come across in life you do not get along with, tolerate them as best you can.
  13. There is no sense in wasting time on people who wouldn’t waste it on you just the same.
  14. It’s ok to stay in every now and then and enjoy a night of Netflix and relaxation.
  15. But, it’s also ok to go out on a Thursday when you have an 8am on Friday-it’s all about moderation.
  16. It’s ok to eat those foods that aren’t good for you every once in awhile.
  17. Family will have your back always.
  18. Everything will work out the way it is supposed to, even if it doesn’t seem so right now.
  19. Tinder may not always be the best route to find a future significant other.
  20. Don’t be afraid to go out and try new things and meet new people along the way.
  21. The best thing you can do for yourself is keep moving forward, the best is yet to come.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
