21 Things I've Learned In 21 Years

As another year passes, it gets me thinking about everything I've done in my lifetime thus far. It feels like just yesterday that I was starting my first year of high school and now I'm preparing to graduate college. When I look back, I think about all the people I've met, the things that I've done, the memories I've made, and the lessons I've learned. It hasn't always been easy, but it's been quite the ride. Here are 21 things I've learn in 21 years:

  1. There will be plenty of bad days, but there will always better days. Whatever it is, it will get better.
  2. Don't bother with internet drama—you'll either regret it or look stupid.
  3. Always buy an abundance of toilet paper.
  4. There's no place like home.
  5. Put down technology and enjoy the world.
  6. It's okay to be sad. Eat your ice cream, lay in your bed, watch your Netflix—you do you.
  7. If you want it, go for it. You're going to regret what you didn't do.
  8. Be nice to everyone you meet, for everyone is fighting their own battles.
  9. Treat yourself—set aside "Me Time."
  10. Listen to your orthodontist.
  11. Love yourself.
  12. Never put your happiness in someone else's hands.
  13. Respect your parents. They love you.
  14. Little actions go a long way.
  15. Coupons also go a long way.
  16. "You will find that it is necessary to let things go; simply for the reason that they are heavy."—Know when it's time to let go.
  17. It's okay to not know what you want.
  18. Be spontaneous—take advantage of being young!
  19. Put extra effort into your relationships (family, friends, love, etc.). It's always nice to be appreciated—let them know you care.
  20. Take care of your body—it's yours forever.
  21. 21 years goes by faster than you think.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
