21 Fightin' Female Songs For February

Valentine's Day is upon us yet again. *cue groan*

For those of us who are not in the business of being smothered by a significant other on this annual event, this can be one of the most ridiculous days of the year. Hearts are everywhere. Red, purple, white, and pink. A lot of us don't even like pink as much as all of the big name brands think we do. One of the only bonuses to this particular date is all the discount chocolate everywhere. Except for those of y'all who don't like chocolate. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

February fourteenth is not a time for us to pull on our fuzzy socks, pop in some sappy rom-com and cry over our half-eaten boxes of chocolate. Quite the opposite. It is time for us to pull on our boots, strap on our belts, and become independent women who are proud of being single and valuable without a male counterpart. No matter what society tells us, we are unique, creative, and capable even though we don't have a man constantly telling us so.

Now, to inspire our chin-up, shoulders-back, I-can-take-on-the-world attitude, some donkey-kickin' fightin'-female songs will be listed below. (disclaimer: some of these songs aren't explicitly fightin'-female songs, but strong-human songs. you get the idea):

1. Salute by Little Mix

(the friend who recommended this song to me commented on it: "makes me want to punch through the wall". but, in a good way.)

2. Rolling in the Deep by Adele

3. How Far I'll Go from Disney's Moana

4. Born for This by Mandisa

5. Concrete Girl by Switchfoot

6. Titanium (feat. Sia) by David Guetta

7. Wildflowers by Debra Black

8. Fighter by Christina Aguilera

9. You Don't Know How Beautiful You Are by Jon Foreman

10. Brave by Sara Bareilles

11. On Top of the World by Imagine Dragons

12. Fight Song by Rachel Platten

13. Gold by Britt Nicole

14. One Girl Revolution by Superchick

15. Good To Be A Girl by Tricia

16. Write Your Story by Francesca Battistelli

17. To The Dreamers by for King & Country

18. Warrior by Abandon

19. You Don't Own Me by Lesley Gore

20. Girl Power by The Cheetah Girls

21. Strong Girl by various artists for a nonprofit organization.

I hope you enjoy these fightin'-female songs--share them with your fightin'-female friends!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
