As covid-19 ravages the world, many are left wondering when we will return to normalcy. It has been an unfortunate couple of months that has completely changed the landscape of the world. We are living through history right now.
Part of living through this new world, is a life without sports. Sports is normal in this country, and there were very few nights we would go without having some type of live sporting event happening somewhere. Then covid-19 hit and everything we used to take for granted was taken from us. Sports leagues around the world, cancelling seasons, tournaments, even the olympics closed shop for 2021. It has been something we have never seen before as a sports community. Luckily, however, the National Football League has found a way to distract this country when we needed it most. Deciding to keep the NFL Draft as scheduled was exactly what we needed. Everyone has been dealing with lifestyle changes, school from home, work from home, why can't the NFL do the same? Well they did. In an event that did not need any in person contact, was scrutinized for not being cancelled. But the NFL did not care, they knew the country needed this and they delivered. The first round was everything it was expected to be. Some trades, surprising picks and players left for day 2 who were not expected to be there. The NFL draft, although virtual, gave us all a sense of what our normal life used to be. There was not one thought of Covid-19 other than the rightful tributes to essential workers and those lost from this terrible virus, and it was beautiful. For those not involved in the sports world, equate this to your at home concerts that have been going on the last couple of weeks or your favorite talk shows going virtual instead of cancelling all together. The sports world needed this, America needed this, and hopefully this is just the beginning of getting back to the normal life we all covet.
