2018 was a great year for film. Many surprising performances from smaller actors and many independent films rising to success. With the award season approaching, here are 12 movies from 2018 that deserve to be added to your must-see list.
"Bohemian Rhapsody"
"Bohemian Rhapsody" reenacts the legacy of Queen and their iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury. The movie is shot brilliantly including the concert scenes which make the audience feel like they are there. The movie tells the story of Queen from the beginning of the band to the death of Freddie Mercury.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" is exciting, well-acted, visually appealing, and heartwarming. The audience learns more about the band and the legacy of Freddie Mercury along with bringing back memories for many longtime fans. It also introduces a new generation to the music.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" recently won Best Motion Picture for a Drama at the Golden Globes. Rami Malek, who played Freddie Mercury also won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama.
"Sorry To Bother You"
"Sorry To Bother You" defies all expectations and is one of the most unique storylines of 2018. This dark comedy film follows the struggles and success of Cassius "Cash" Green, through his rise to success as a telemarketer. Once Cash is encouraged by a coworker to use a white accent to sell products, he becomes the most successful in the business.
With Cash's new found success, the movie takes even more of a spin as Cash is promoted and faces the craziest corporate conspiracy. The film was shot and based in Oakland, California for Boots Riley's directorial debut.
"To All The Boys I've Loved Before"
A Netflix Film that blew up all over the internet for its unique story and admiration for diversity in the movie industry. "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" gives a realistic storyline on what it feels like to be in high school. The movie follows Lara Jean's discovery of herself through an unfortunate and embarrassing event. Her sister mailing out all of her love letters.
Throughout the movie, the audience grows with Lara Jean and roots for her through her journey of self-discovery, courage, and confidence. The movie is funny, heartfelt, and more than a love story.
A sequel to "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" was announced on December 19, 2018, through a unique YouTube video that had fans going crazy.
"Annihilation"
"Annihilation" is another directorial masterpiece brought to you by the director of Ex Machina, Alex Garland. Garland created a film with many hidden and underlying meanings. The film also has a strong female presence and interesting revolving themes.
Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac are two of many fantastic actors in the film. The unique, intriguing, and thought-provoking story is definitely one you need to see more than once. Not only is the storyline great, but the score and effects definitely add to the character and suspense of the film.
"Annihilation" is Sci-Fi horror brilliance.
"BlacKkKlansman"
"BlacKkKlansman" is a funny, suspenseful, and eyeopening movie on the past and presence of racism in America. Not only do you get to learn the true story of a black detective becoming a klans member, but you are able to learn about the influence the past has had on our current hate crime rise in America.
The acting, directing, and references to the present are fantastic. Adam Driver and John David Washington had two incredible performances alongside their amazing director, Spike Lee.
"BlacKkKlansman" is one of the most brilliant films of 2018 and is a must-see. The film was able to cross many genres and have one of the most incredible endings. The end will have you emotional and wanting to be an advocate for change.
"Beautiful Boy"
"Beautiful Boy" is an incredible true story about a teenager who experiences the struggle of addiction. Throughout the film, Nic Sheff struggles with addiction, but his father, David Sheff doesn't lose hope. This movie staring Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell is heartbreaking, but it teaches the audience about the struggle of addiction. "Beautiful Boy" perfectly demonstrates the cycles of an addict and how addiction can start at a young age.
Chalamet has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor on multiple award shows including the Golden Globes. This is the second year in a row that Chalamet has received such high praise for his roles in past films. "Beautiful Boy" received fairly positive reviews and was praised for the performances and chemistry of Carell and Chalamet.
"A Quiet Place"
"A Quiet Place" tells a unique story without saying many words.
John Krasinski's directorial masterpiece was able to create a post-apocalyptic horror film that fans want more of. The film stars Krasinski and his wife Emily Blunt. The plot revolves around a family that struggles to survive in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters that can hear everything.
The film is nominated for multiple awards including Best Score. "A Quiet Place" is set to have a sequel released on May 15, 2020.
"Upgrade"
"Upgrade" is one of the most unique films of 2018. The film follows a man named Grey Trace, who is implanted with a chip that cures his recent paralyzation. The chip called Stem surprises Grey as it begins to control his movement and help him fight his battles.
"Upgrade" is filled with dark comedy, action scenes, and futuristic elements. It is a must-see for those who love action, suspense, and a movie that thinks outside the box.
The film received positive reviews from critics and was praised for its ability to cross many genres while remaining unique and original. One critic called it, "One part The Six Million Dollar Man, one part Death Wish revenge fantasy."
"Incredibles 2"
"Incredibles 2" was one of the most anticipated movies that the audience didn't know if they'd ever see. The first film came out in 2004, therefore the film brought in a mixed audience of children and adults. Some new to the fandom and some waiting years for this film.
Fourteen years later, the Incredibles take off right where they left off. The plot, script, and animation were superb, earning the film a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes along with countless other positive reviews and an amazing viewer turnout.
"Incredibles 2" has grossed $608.6 million in the United States and Canada, and $634.2 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $1.243 billion. The end of the film introduced a possible third addition to the "Incredibles" franchise.
"Crazy Rich Asians"
"Crazy Rich Asians" is an American romantic comedy that was praised for its inclusion and storyline. The film is funny, well-acted, and romantic. The film crosses many cultures and customs while relating to the audience no matter where they are from.
"Crazy Rich Asians" follows a Chinese American professor that travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's rich family. Prior to the visit, she is unaware of her boyfriend's wealth and status in Singapore. The film is the first major film to feature a majority Asian American cast since "The Joy Luck Club" in 1993. The film receives positive reviews including a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film grossed over $238 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy in a decade. The film was nominated for many awards including Best Picture at the Golden Globes. The film did so well that there are two sequels in the making!
