This year's 2018 FIFA World Cup is being hosted throughout Russia, a country with much soccer influence and many soccer pitches. And thus, marking the start of the world cup, Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-nil in the World Cup opener, which is not surprising considering Russia's higher soccer skill and home-field advantage. And many exciting games have already taken place, especially including the 3-3 draw between Portugal and Spain, which consisted of a Cristiano Ronaldo hat trick in order to prevent a Portugal loss.
And even the close 1-0 Uruguay win over Egypt and the 2-1 France win over Australia were close and exciting as well. But by far my favorite match of the World Cup so far was Iceland's draw with Argentina. I am a huge Argentina fan and a Messi fan, but I am also a huge underdog supporter, and that is what Iceland was. Despite being such a small nation, and completely lacking in skill compared to the Argentinians, they still managed a draw against the previous World Cup runner-ups. A fun fact: about 1/10 of the Icelandic nation is at the World Cup right now, which was said by a commentator of the Iceland-Argentina game. But alas, there are still many more games to be played, and much more excitement to be had.
