First and foremost, happy 2017! Whether you had a fantastic 2016 or a 2016 that can just be left in the past for good, it's that time of the year where we are all looking for change. The change we want to see is something to start the year off fresh. A clean slate! I always hear friends, family, peers, and people far and near say things like "my resolution is to start going to the gym" or maybe something like "stop drinking so much alcohol", "save more money", "eat healthier", or "start being nicer to others", whatever it may be, good for you! But as the weeks pile up and months fly by, do people normally stick to their goals? I'm leaving this answer up to you and your New Year's resolution. I don't like telling people what to do 24:7, but I do like to encourage people or maybe allow them to see a different perspective on things. The first question to ask is are you making resolutions for others or for yourself? We live in a society where we are set to prove that we are the best humans we can be to everyone. We may start to feel as if what others think is more important than what we think. This time (like I said, clean slate), your New Year's resolution should be to start doing things for you. Go the gym and get that bikini body you know you can flaunt with some hard work and dedication for yourself, not for the Instagram likes. Maybe spare that homeless man you saw in the city an extra dollar or two; he may not be able to purchase gourmet with $2, but he may be able to get something off the dollar menu at McDonald's, which is better than nothing! I want you to do things because you want to do them for the happiness, satisfaction, kindness, health, power, glory, victory, whatever that may be, you wish to achieve at the end of 2017. If you can't do that, don't. Resolutions are things we want to work on that we never really got a chance to work on in the past. Do we get lazy? Yeah! Does something tragic happen? Maybe! Do we have other priorities that come before what we want to do? Most likely! Before you set out to make a resolution, do not be afraid to take baby steps and start out simple. Maybe you cannot afford that gym membership or you have been biting your nails since birth, but the important thing is to take your resolution slow; try doing at-home exercises or try putting your least favorite scent on your nail beds! Nothing comes all at once. You will not get abs or stop world hunger in a week; the important thing is to prove to yourself that you are willing to take the time to embrace the journey to fulfilling your New Year's resolution. We have friends, families, marriages, jobs, hobbies, habits, and various other priorities that come into play with a resolution. Of course, we must remember to solve conflicts with each and every priority that has played a critical role in our lives for years and that will help us figure out ways to achieve the next big resolution that could change our lives for years to come. I know you are capable of trying something new and making a difference within your lifestyle to achieve happiness, so here is your chance. 2017! Happy New Year, go and chase that resolution while enjoying the run!
