The New Year is still fresh at the beginning of the first few weeks of January and resolutions are still pouring out from our hearts. I hear the consistant lose weight, eat healthier, make more money, and travel more, but 2017 seems to hold a different vibe. This year seems to be the selfish year. We throw the term selfish around like confetti and the true definition seems to have lost its true tone.

self·ish

adjective

  1. (of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

Yes, we all have the time in our lives when we need to do what we believe will bring us the greatest pleasure knowing we will disappoint someone along the line. This is inevitable as you may decide to give up a long term hobby to pursue something else, take a different path or any other multitude of choices. The difference between being selfish and benevolent is finding the balancing line between the two; our 20s may be considered selfish, but this is the greatest time to embrace those around us.

The more you reach out to others as you explore interests and passions is when the deepest relationships are formed. Connections are built through common views, hobbies and values all of which are in the core of what you find to be enjoyable to spend your time. The light turns on in us when we get our adrenaline going in our passions which radiates and attracts even more positive vibes from others creating those life long relationships we all crave. It's a lonely, unproductive world by believing every move we take should bring us our own pleasure.

Being twenty means looking out into the world to find your place. It is the time to explore this earth and what it has offer and how your puzzle piece fits into it. Our 20s are a beautiful time where we have nothing to lose and everything to gain by having so much to give: we have energy, ideas and resources unlike anybody else. You have unique talents which nobody else have and this is the greatest time to put them to use. Being 20 means you are mobile, agile, and fruitful.

In 2017 and every year following do what makes you happy. Have your selfish moments to say no and yes when you want to. Travel, take time to learn a new hobby or sharpen your current one, and find your inner happiness. Make 2017 the time to reach out and make those heartfelt connections. At the end of the day we all want to matter and see how we can bring light to this world - something we can't do by focusing soley on ourselves.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
