2017 Grammy Awards

A brief recap and my thoughts from the 2017 Grammy Awards.

2017 Grammy Awards

As many of you know, the 2017 Grammy Awards were last night. It is a night about nothing other than music. From Adele to Metallica, there were tons of musical legends there last night. I don't watch many awards shows, but I try to watch the Grammy's every year because music is a detrimental factor in my life. While watching the awards ceremony, I decided to take notes about the performances and artists that presented the awards. Obviously I won't write about every single performance because, let's be real, you'd be reading this article for hours. Your girl has a lot to say.

The show started off with Adele's popular song Hello. I thought it was an amazing way to kick it off. Adele's make up, but more specifically, her perfectly winged eyeliner never disappoints. It's always flawless and sharp. Also, vocals for days. I'm pretty sure Adele is one of the best vocalists alive right now. Adele took the stage again about half way through the show to honor George Michael. She had messed up a couple times and asked to restart. I give her mad props because that's hard to do in general let alone at an award show has big as the Grammy's. Her standing ovation was well deserved.

James Corden's performance/entire hosting gig was hysterical. The pink sock after his one shoe came off killed me. If him and Ellen Degeneres could just take turns hosting award shows that would be great. I would probably watch more of them. From the no pants stunt to the shade thrown at Donald Trump, it made me laugh to the point of tears damn near every time he was on screen. I also loved that they incorporated Carpool Karaoke into the Grammy's because that has been such a successful series this past year.

Next up was The Weeknd. Lowkey think he's overrated now. Don't get me wrong, I still love him and his music but everyone kind of ruined him for me after Fifty Shades of Grey came out. I'm also not a fan of Daft Punk. Or the song I Feel It Coming. Some of the lyrics make me uncomfortable.

A couple performances later we have Ed freaking Sheeran. This dude fell off the face of the earth for AN ENTIRE YEAR and makes a comeback at the Grammy's as a one man band. When will your fave ever?! His vocals were on point per usual. I loved that he took that year off and focused on traveling and music. He looked so comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely happy up on that stage.

BEYONCE. Girl. Her baby bump is adorable. She was dressed like a literal QUEEN. Her backup dancers looked like they were worshipping her and it scared me, but after some research I found out that it was about the black community trying to "get a seat at the American table" which was in reference to her sister's album. Which I thought was an amazing thing to symbolize. The background at the beginning was kind of trippy but it was pretty cool because it showed Beyonce's mom and Blue Ivy and the poems that were being recited were from a from a book called Teaching My Mother How To Give Birth. Honestly, the art that was portrayed in her performance was eye opening. At first, I wasn't a huge fan, but after finding out the story behind the performance I loved it with every fiber of my being.

Then Camila Cabello presented an award and it reminded how bitter I am about her leaving 5H...I loved her dress though. She looked like a princess. I'll always have love for her, but I'm sad that she left.

Next we have Bruno Mars. This dude. His vocals are outstanding. I always tell myself he's overrated and yet I still love his music. Especially the song he performed. I don't like that he tries so hard to be a ladies man though. It's kind of sickening, but it's whatever. He's an amazing artist and I love him for that.

Laverne Cox is my queen. Love that shout out for all non-binary's out there!

Lady Gaga and Metallica was lit...literally. The stage was on fire. It was cool. I'm not sure if one of the mics was screwed up or not, but it was cool nonetheless. Also, god bless Lady Gaga for crowd surfing.

AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT FREAKING LEAST, the Bee Gee's tribute with Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Little Big Town, and Andra Day. I was literally dead. Demi is such a damn power house and I love that she is finally getting recognition for it. She killed those high notes, man. Also, her hair and make up was gorgeous. Her skin was glowing. It looked phenomenal. Tori Kelly is great. Everyone knows that. It is so obvious that she is like America's sweetheart. She's so adorable and then she opens her mouth to sing and blows everyone away with this big voice. I'm not a huge fan of Little Big Town, but their harmonies were great. Again, I don't really listen to Andra Day, but her vocals were amazing. I wasn't expecting her to be as good as she was. I was pleasantly surprised with the entire mash up.

In conclusion, a lot happened at the awards last night. I loved a lot of it and disliked a lot of it, but it the end I'm thankful that we have so many talented and unique artists to lead the way for future musicians. It makes my heart happy to see so many people passionate about creating music for others to hear.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
