What You Missed At This Year's Golden Globes

The 74th annual Golden Globes came and left but didn’t leave without gracing us with some amazing moments that will be known for years to come. To start off the show, Jimmy Fallon, the host for the night, got off to a bad start with the teleprompter breaking down and him scrambling to find his words in front of millions. As Fallon has been in the public eye for quite some time now, and has interviewed countless celebrities, and even hosted the Emmy’s a few years back, anyone with the experience he has had would become frantic. Although, he hid it very well, many viewers felt empathetic towards him with some taking to Twitter saying, “That opening #Golden Globes number was everything! ‪@jimmyfallon killin' it as per usual” while others were quite critical saying, “I thought ‪@jimmyfallon was a decent comedian Sadly, tonight he ran out of scripts & humiliated himself in 4 minutes” and “Wiig and Carell just outdid Jimmy Fallon in 30 seconds #GoldenGlobes.”

In regards to Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell coming onto the stage trying to make the Globes fun and not so uptight and “boring” as it had started off with, hoping to bring the laughs, in which they succeeded, many people believe it should be this duo to host the Globes next year. It wouldn’t be the first time the Globes had a duo hosting considering the infamous Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in years past have hosted three years in a row. As they put it in one of their monologues, “This is Hollywood and if something kinda works they’ll just keep doing it, until everybody hates it.”

As for some other moments you may have missed; Ryan Gosling won best actor for his role in La La Land which won big Sunday night. But, if you played close attention you could see Andrew Garfield and Ryan Reynolds who were also up for this award, in the background kissing. When Gosling did accept his award, his speech was beautifully said, thanking Eva Mendes, the mother of his two daughters, or as he puts it, “my lady” for allowing him to make this movie, La La Land. And some of her responsibilities included taking care of their daughter, Esmeralda while pregnant with another and also taking care of her dying brother who had cancer. In which Gosling dedicated the award to him, Carlos Mendes.

Speaking of beautifully spoken speeches, Meryl Streep must have given one that will most definitely go down in the books as the best for years to come. She was awarded one of the most prestigious awards given at the Golden Globes, the Cecil B. Demille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. This award has also been given to Woody Allen, George Clooney, Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Robert Di Nero, and countless others. It’s hard to come up with any reasoning as to why she doesn’t deserve this award considering she has 30 Golden Globe nominations and over 20 Oscar nominations. Some things she talked about in her speech to make it the talk of the night was her so effortlessly bringing politics in and all in all asking people to support the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Other moments from this star-studded show included Donald Glover, also known by his rapper monicker Childish Gambino, thanking Migos for making “Bad and Boujee” saying, “and I want to thank Migos not for being in the show (Atlanta) but for making Bad and Boujee, like that’s the best song… ever.”

Or how about Brad Pitt making a surprise appearance, especially after he whole chaotic mess between him and his now ex-wife, Angelina Jolie over their kids and who deserves full custody. The crowd went insane when as he was walking onto the stage, many people haven’t even seen him outside of his home since all of this went down in late September early October.

A few funny moments to talk about from that night was Emma Stone attempting to give a hug to her director on La La Land as his wife was giving him a congratulatory kiss after it was announced that he won Best Director in a Comedy or Musical. Another hilarious moment was Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn presenting an award but the catch is that Goldie Hawn couldn’t read the teleprompter properly. This came to the point where Schumer asked Kurt Russel, longtime partner, for her glasses!

Hopefully, this gives you the gist of what you may have missed at the 74th annual Golden Globes. Surely, this will be the last time you miss it because as you now know, it is definitely not to be missed in the future.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
