With the year coming to a close, we can look back at the chaos known as 2016 and remember it as one of the wildest years we've come to experience and the countless times we asked ourselves if we were dreaming (although sadly, we weren't.) It's been a year of ups and downs that has both brought us together and torn us apart, yet somehow we've finally reached the homestretch. So with 2017 just around the corner, here's a recap of some of the best (and worst) moments brought to us over the course of the past year.

1. Biggest Upset of 2016

Bronze: Chicago Cubs win their first World Series in 108 years

Silver: The United Kingdom leaves the European Union (Brexit)

Gold: Republican Donald Trump defeats Democrat Hilary Clinton in general election

Honorable mention: Cleveland Cavaliers come back from 3-1 series deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated.
