What did this year bring us?

2016: A Recap

This year has brought mixed reviews on pretty much any subject. Whether it had to do with politics, celebrities, or viral videos, someone had an opinion on the matter. If you are connected to any means of social media you can see many memes on how this year has been. Let’s take a look at what 2016 really brought us.

One of the greatest things we saw this year was politics. The presidential race was one of the most followed events this year. Many of the people keeping up with this election were first-time voters, so with that young of a crowd came a big surge on social media about political views. If you were on Facebook, there wasn’t a video on it that didn’t have comments about Hillary and Trump. You could find a video about which guacamole was the best buy, and still, see a debate in the comments about how Hillary or Trump and how they are ruining the country.

Celebrity relationships and were a huge thing as well. From Taylor Swift and her relationship drama to the big split of Brangelina, no relationship was safe this year. We saw many make ups and break ups that seem to have the whole world wrapped up in whatever drama they could find. Friendships were tested as well with these winds of change. Tabloids and news media would keep the public entertained with the constant backstabbing and betrayals of celebrities.

Celebrity deaths caused many people to believe that 2016 should be stopped. Many famous celebrities passed away this year such as David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, Carrie Fisher, and so many others that have broken the hearts of fans. There was even a petition to save Betty White for the terrors of 2016. It seemed as though no one could catch a break from this year.

Race wars broke out this year as the Black Lives Matter movement rose. The safety of citizens, as well as law enforcement, were tested this year as it seemed to many Americans that there was no social justice. We had families torn apart because of political views. There was a great division between men in America because of racial tension.

Many question why this year was terrible. From what has been shown through social media and different articles, 2016 has been pictured as some sort of “force” that has been guiding the year into negativity, but could the real reason be humanity itself? We see that man has a sinful nature and tends to do the most selfish things. So instead of blaming God, or whatever “force” we want to, why don’t we start looking at ourselves?

It may be hard to look at ourselves and put ourselves to blame. We as humans have this selfish pride that tells us we need to be right all of the time. So instead of being selfish and have this “me only” attitude, what if we start helping one another? What if instead of constantly fighting we start to love each other? Why don’t we put this year behind us and make 2017 a redemption year?

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
