Bye Bye 2016

Describing a full year can be a hard thing to do, remembering what happened over the course of 365 days is probably close to impossible. It’s difficult to remember the things that went on in the world, let alone all the things that you yourself experienced over the year. Here’s some of the stuff that happened to me this year.

This year was full of cool things, I interned at a record label, got my name in the Warped Tour Compilation CD, went to at least 50 concerts, met Yellowcard, New Found Glory and Emarosa, worked at 2 music festivals, and lastly, got a new puppy. I’d say overall it was a pretty rad year for me personally.

Working at 2 music festivals (Warped Tour and Self Help) was awesome! At Self Help, I was there before the doors opened and so I watched Underoath soundcheck, which was so cool because it was one of their first shows after their hiatus. I only worked Warped Tour for a day and it was a lot of work but it was definitely worth it.

Interning at a record label was probably the coolest thing I got to do this year. Eventually, I’d like to work in the music industry and interning was a good starting point. I worked at SideOneDummy records (check them out, their seriously the coolest label ever) and learned a bunch about marketing. Along with that I was able to help out with the Warped Tour Compilation CD, I helped with contracts and arranging credits on the album, and then my name was put into the credits of the album!

The amount of concerts that I went to this year would seem a little ridiculous to most people. The 1st show I went to this year was to see this band called Movements and the last show I went to this year was The Wonder Years/Real Friends. Between those two there were probably 40-60 others, I’m actually surprised I can still hear. The coolest shows I went to this year were Lights, Thrice, Coldplay, Aaron Gillespie and Twenty One Pilots. Those shows were special shows, they were either in tiny rooms or massive stadiums but each was amazing.

Along with the shows I went to, I also met some cool musicians. I met all of New Found Glory, Yellowcard and Emarosa. Meeting Yellowcard was especially cool, because they're retiring next year and they were the first band I saw without my parents. All of the bands signed stuff for me and were all really nice.

The very last thing I must tell you about is the most important, my new puppy. Luna joined the family in the Summer and I'm her favorite person out of all the people in my family. Also, she's really cute and fluffy.

Overall, 2016 was a pretty awesome year for me and I’m hoping 2017 will be cooler. There’s a new Paramore album and Coldplay EP coming out next year so I’m almost positive that it will be a good one. If you read this, I hope it was a good year for you too.

P.S. To all the cool singers and actors that died this year- May The Force Be With You.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
