Lessons We Should Take From 2016

Not all "L's" have to be a loss.

Wow, it's that time of year again already? It seems like it all started just yesterday.

We are beginning to approach the final week of December, and of course, the final week of 2016. As the final days of the year quickly approach, I think we can all agree on two things: this year went by fast and many of us took a lot of "L's" this year.

Looking back on 2016, the year felt like a day, a very crappy, eventful day. Many events happened this year; we lost many people, and many people lost their minds. We lost the likes of Prince, Muhammad Ali and most recently, Craig Sager. And we finally realized that America has lost its mind as Donald Trump became the 45th President. Along with the notable "L's" taken this year, many of us including myself faced personal "L's". Whether we didn't get that job or scholarship, didn't get close to reaching our goals or we had a falling out with friends and even family. The "L's" we took this year were plenty and made this year pretty awful...depending on the way you view your "L's."

For those who don't know, usually when we take "L's," it usually means we lost, sometimes in a very bad way. We all take "L's" every now and then, it's life and usually, it's bound to happen to even the best of us. But if you look at the "L's" you take in life in a different way, it can possibly change your outlook on life.

How about instead of view these "L's" as "Losses," how about viewing them as "Lessons"?

Instead of being upset about something not going your way, be grateful for the lesson you can learn from your setback and be optimistic about how you can apply that lesson to make your life better in the future. Say for instance you had the perfect chance to get an internship and you had an interview coming up for it. You don't prepare for the interview and screw up the interview and don't get the interview. Instead of staying upset about the result, learn from your mistake of not properly preparing for the interview and use that lesson to benefit you for future internship opportunities. This is one of the many ways you can change your view of the "L's" in life.

So as we reflect on 2016, we can all agree that many of us took plenty of "L's" this year. But hopefully, we can look back on those "L's", see what we can learn from them, and make 2017 a much better year.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
