2016 Holiday Gift Guide: My Top 5

Thanksgiving flew by, and it's almost December. You know what that means: It's time to start holiday shopping. My go-to strategy when buying gifts for other people, is to get them something that I would want to receive.

Now, if your family is anything like mine (or if you have very "Type A" friends) then you've already been asked what you want to receive for the holidays.

Let's jump into it. What five things do I want to give and receive this holiday season.

1) FitBit Replacement Band(s)

For the active person in your life, who also puts a lot of emphasis on looking their best. Above is an example of a replacement band for the model of FitBit I have (Alta), and this one is little on the pricer side. You can wear your FitBit everywhere, including when you're dressing to impress, without having to leave your casual -- and dare I say, clunky -- fitness tracker at home.

*If the person you have in mind for this doesn't already have a FitBit and you think they'd use one, you can get them one instead of a band! There are a ton on Amazon, Target, even eBay, so you can make sure you get what they'll love.

2) Socks

Six-year-old Jentry is cringing at this recommendation. When you were a kid, you hated getting socks! But these days, I would love to receive a few pairs of really nice (vegan) socks that have thick, plush fabric and fun patterns. It's also really important to have a multitude of lengths for your socks!

As long as you pick color schemes and patterns that you know this person can easily integrate into their wardrobe, you can be confident that they'll wear and love them. Plus, they can take you for keeping their toes warm during some serious winter snuggles...

3) Mugs

Similarly to the idea that you can never have too many socks, you can never have too many mugs. I like to regularly get a new mug, just to make that time in my mornings a little bit sweeter. Again, getting a variety of colors, patterns, even textures (pottery, porcelain, aluminum) can be an great way to add some excitement to your friend's morning.

Bonus points if you pay close attention to the type of mug they prefer. Some people are more into teacups, some people are into thick glass.

4) Spa Day

Okay, this one is a little bit more expensive, depending on how much you like this person. Everyone can appreciate a massage, and it's one of the most amazing gifts to receive. Go online and research local spas around you and get some prices. You can often get a package around the holidays for a discounted price -- maybe even a couples day, which you could use as an excuse to invite yourself along for the experience! (;

Honestly, this does not have to be that expensive. A simple facial, a 30-minute massage, even a simple pedicure can brighten someone's entire month, and they have you to thank for it! It's like giving this person permission to really let go and be pampered. Who doesn't need that after the holidays!?

5) Fix A Problem

This one is a little bit more vague, but it's going to really require you to pay attention to your friend. Think back to the times you are with them: Is there something they're always complaining about? Is there some area in which they struggle for which you can provide a solution? Are they unwilling to take a plunge to get something they really want, simply because they don't feel they can justify the purchase? That's where you come in and show how good of a friend and listener you are.

If their phone is always dying, buy them an external battery! Similarly, if they're always missing a charger or a cable, buy them a multi-pack of fun colored phone cables! If they're always leaving their keys, get a keychain tracker! If there's a pair of RayBan sunglasses that they've had their eyes on all year, casually ask in conversation what they would pick if they could buy those sunglasses.

Doing this shows how much you care for this person and how much you listen when they vent or express frustration. Every time they put on those sweet Wayfarers, they'll think of you.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
