If there was one thing we can take away from 2015, it's that Taylor Swift is on top of the world. She broke the record for most views with her "Bad Blood" music video, made Billboard's top 100 with six different singles, and showed the world that girl power is always in style with her infamous squad by her side. With her record breaking abilities and a world tour that sold out in minutes, her album "1989" made history almost overnight.
Due to the fact that "1989" was so successful, it also landed quite a few Grammy nominations. Her album was released in October of 2014, but she missed the cutoff for the 2015 Grammys by only weeks, giving her the whole year to show the world that "1989" was a force to be reckoned with. This year, she is nominated for seven awards including Record of the Year for "Blank Space" and Album of the Year of "1989."
Although Taylor is nominated for seven awards, fellow artists The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar (who she also shares a nomination with for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in "Bad Blood") are also up for a few awards themselves. While The Weeknd is also nominated for seven awards, Lamar proves that he is also a force to be reckoned with by bringing in eleven nominations for himself. Even though Swift and Lamar are largely in different categories, there will be room for some "bad blood" to who see whoever wins the night.
Taylor has already won her fair share of Grammy awards in the past, but this year is a little different. In past years, she has taken home awards under the Country category, however, with the arrival of "1989," Swift announced that she was officially transitioned into a pop artist. Her nominations are now underneath the pop category, which is new territory for her. We have watched as the world has embraced this change, but it will be interesting to see if the music industry has done so as well.
Even if Taylor does not "win" the Grammys, she has already won in our eyes. Not many other artists can successfully say they managed to sell out arenas by bringing guest artists on stage at every venue, break multiple records (in all areas), bring home eight VMAs, and become the matriarch of the coolest girl squad around. Taylor won 2015 and it will sure be interesting to see if she will win 2016 (or at least the 2016 Grammys).
The Grammys will air February 15th on CBS.
