The year 2016 in review seems to have unanimously been given a bad reputation and as I am writing this, the year is technically not finished. Exactly what made this year so bad that we forgot about all the good things in between? Okay, I agree that if 2016 were to be a movie it would tend more towards the physiological thriller spectrum and even more so towards a NSFK (not safe for kids) rating. To make a summary of this year less painful and give a better outlook towards 2017, here is the year as expressed through memes. Here is the list of the terribly bad, the awful, and the ugly mixed in with some levity.
1. ISIS
Terrorist group Isis has claimed responsibility for international terrorist attacks this year ranging from Niche, the Istanbul Airport, to the Orlando shootings. With the entire world looking towards such acts of devastation, it has many people questioning their safety.2. United States Presidential Election
Update. Evidence of Russia manipulating the United States election has been found by the CIA and Senators from both political parties are concerned. This election raised strong emotions and caused the #NotMyPresident to occur after Donald Trump's election. It was the first time a woman was nominated by a major party to run for president.3. Largest Marines Reserve Established
It's time to celebrate! A portion of the ocean near Antarctica was recently designated this year as the largest marine reserve in the world. Some cheers were heard from the fishy cast of this year's movie "Finding Dory" in support of the action.4. Brexit Occurs
Okay, in short "Brexit" means British exit from the European Union. Not great for the European Union. If you want to read more click here5. Rio Olympics
Michael Phelps is the winner, sorry folks everyone else can exit the pool. This image was captured this year when Phelps swam against his rival Chad le Clos from South Africa. Congratulations Phelps on having earned the largest amount of Olympic medals. Side note- your family is adorable.6. DAPL Pipeline
After months of peaceful protests and camping out from tribes and protest supporters, and people checking in on Facebook to Standing Rock to signing petitions, the move against the pipeline was far spread. The pipeline has now been rerouted because it was called an invasion of sacred land and has a high chance of contaminating water to people. Speaking of water...7. Flint Water Crisis Continues
Flint still has yet to have clean water this year. This is a big deal because children have reported higher levels of lead in their system from drinking and being exposed to the water. The city cut corners in an effort to save money and began to use the Flint River. This problem began in 2014 and people still require bottled water today.8. US Reaches Pre-recession Unemployment Rate (Celebratory Fistbump)
Time to celebrate! The US now has an extremely low rate of unemployment, to the point that the numbers line up with what the US had previous to the recession. The news broke during Obama's last term as president and over the last few months (this news was discovered in November). These are some numbers that I can really love.
9. Giant Pandas Are Off Endangered List
Another thing to celebrate! Who doesn't love these adorable cute and friendly looking bears? This is good news. Celebrate it.
10. Surviving 2016
It's been a long and difficult year. Now let's look forward to a chance to improve in 2017. Let it be better and filled with joy.
