Here are 32 bold predictions for the 2016-2017 NBA season:
1. Atlanta Hawks: Playoff Streak comes to an end
The Atlanta Hawks have been to the playoffs for nine straight seasons. They have recently signed Dwight Howard, an eight time all star. However, every team Howard has played on he has had a problem with either the coach or the players. I expect this trend to continue. I didn't like when the Hawks signed Howard in the first place. He doesn't space the floor well and he is poorly motivated. The Hawks had great chemistry for nine years but expect Howard to change that and disrupt it. Hawks miss the playoffs for the first time in nine years.
2. Boston Celtics: Continue to make strides. Win a playoff series.
There is nothing about the Celtics roster that I don't like. It's deep, it's tall and its strong. They signed all star power forward Al Hofford to make their team even deeper. They drafted Jaylen Brown, small forward out of California, to be their back up small forward and they have Isiah Thomas running point guard and he's as good as anyone. Brad Stevens is one of the best young coaches in the league and he continues to improve. I expect the Celtics to not just get to the playoffs, but to win a playoff series.
3. Brooklyn Nets: Will have the worst record in the NBA.
Just how there was nothing I didn't like about the Celtics roster? Well, there is nothing I like from the Nets roster. They're atrocious. They have no big name player, no coach, no depth and no draft picks. Even if the Nets were to have the worst pick they wouldn't even get the number one overall pick because they traded it five years ago to the Celtics. Atrocious. Good luck, Brooklyn, you'll need it.
4. Charlotte Hornets: Start the season off hot, falter after Christmas.
Listen, I think the Hornets can be a good team. They have a very favorable schedule in the beginning of the year. They should start the season off strong, however, when we get past Christmas and into January the schedule is tough and the Hornets don't have enough fire power to keep track. Kemba Walker will keep them afloat for a while but eventually, he will slow up and the Hornets just don't have another big time player. They miss the playoffs and finish the season 37-45.
5. Chicago Bulls: Hometown Hero Dwayne Wade has vintage Dwayne Wade year but Bulls still miss the playoffs.
Dwayne Wade, future hall of fame Shooting Guard, decided to leave the Miami Heat after 13 years to follow a childhood dream and play for the Chicago Bulls. Chicago is where Wade was born and raised. Wade, at the age of 33, turns back the clock and has one of his better years of his career. Jimmy Butler will continue to strive and Ramon Rondo will do a nice job giving those two the ball but after that there is no depth and bench. Fred Hoiberg is a very good coach, going into his second year but the Bulls miss the playoffs again. I still think they're another year away.
6. Cleveland Cavaliers: Kyrie Irving, not LeBron James, will be the Cavs MVP.
I know, I'm crazy. How can I possibly say LeBron James, the three time world champion, the four time MVP and still be in the prime of his career not be the MVP of his own team? Well, he's obviously still the best player but Kyrie, the young 24 year old point guard is looking to make huge strides. He's going to be a stud this year and is going to look to take pressure off of James. Kyrie will look to control the offense more to give LeBron a break during the game and the regular season, and he is more than capable of getting the job done. Cavs will still be the one seed in the East and win the Eastern Conference and LeBron will be the MVP in the playoffs. Just not the regular season.
7. Dallas Mavericks. Harrison Barnes gets out of the shadow of Golden State, has career year.
Harrison Barnes he always been a good player in this league. A nice, solid piece. But never got a chance to strive while in Golden State. He signed a big deal with Dallas and when he has a chance to be the primary scorer, he'll be the top option and have a career year in his young career.
8. Denver Nuggets. Continue to make strides for the future.
The Nuggets aren't going to the playoffs this year. And probably not next year. But they continue to have young players, like Jamal Murray, Emmanuel Mudiay and Gary Harris. But they need a few more players to compete and miss the playoffs again but are more competitive.
9. Detroit Pistons: Continues to improve. Gets 5 seed in the East playoffs.
Last year the Pistons snuck into the playoffs as the 8 seed. However, this year they will finish 47-35 and be the 5 seed in the East. I like this team a lot. Marcus Morris is a strong small forward. Andre Drummond can get 20+ rebounds at any given time and Tobias Harris is one of the must underrated players in the league. Pistons will improve.
10. Golden State Warriors. Struggle the first 5 games of the year. Soar from there.
No, the Warriors won't win 73 games like last year, even though they signed the NBA's top scorer Kevin Durant. Durant is the third best player in the world. Steph Curry is number 2. Klay Thompson and Draymond Green are all NBA players. They are a "Super Team". However, they will struggle in the first 5 games. The chemistry will be a little off. The Warriors will figure it out and they will win between 67-71 games.
11. Houston Rockets: will score the most points in the NBA but....
The Rockets have an insane offense. James Harden is one of the best scorers in the game. He knows how to score and now has all the room to operate with Dwight Howard gone. Mike Dantoni is a great offensive mind, but he can't coach defense. The Rockets will score the most amount of points but will also give up just as many, if not more.
12. Indiana Pacers: Will be the 2 seed in the East.
The East is good this year, but the Pacers are ready to strive. Paul George is due for an absolute break out year, two years removed from his horrific leg injury. Myles Turner looks like he's going to have an absolute dominant sophomore season and Monte Ellis and Jeff Teague are two solid guards to help out. Pacers get the 2 seed.
13. Los Angeles Clippers: get the 2 seed in the West playoffs
This is bold. The Clippers are good but can they over take either the Spurs or Warriors for the top 2 seeds? Well they seem determined. This looks like Chris Paul's last chance to win the title while he's the main guy. Blake Griffin and Deandre Jordan are both all stars and Chris Paul's is a top player in the world. If they stay healthy they'll be the 2 seeds.
14. Los Angeles Lakers: Young stars look to become the new showtime Lakers but it'll take time.
After 20 AMAZING years of one of the best players to play the game, Kobe Bryant retires. The Lakers have a great young core. D'Angelo Russell, #2 overall pick Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr. and Jordan Clarkson look prime and ready to replicate the Showtime Lakers of years past. It'll take a lot of hard work, patience and effort but they have the talent to do it. It'll take a few years but they make major strides this year.
15. Memphis Grizzlies: continue to be same, above average team and not improve.
The Grizzlies signed Mike Conley to the biggest contract in NBA history. I don't know why he got it, but he did, so congratulations. They signed Chandler Parsons which will help but the Grizzlies will be the same old team as years past and they just keep getting older. They finish 48-34 and are bounced in first round of playoffs.
16. Miami Heat: Risk it all in free agency and falter this year.
The Heat won't be good this year. They tried to sign big free agents this summer and failed at all of them. They lost Dwayne Wade, the face of the franchise and finish this year 34-48. Disappointing year in Miami. At least they have the Dolphins.
17. Milwaukee Bucks: Miss the playoffs... again.
It has been rough in Milwaukee these last few years. They have young talent, especially with Jabari Parker, but they still can't shoot. There is not one person on their roster who is a consistently good shooter. This will affect them the whole year and they finish 32-50.
18. Minnesota Timberwolves: Young Core improves, sneak into the playoffs.
The Timberwolves have an amazing young core. Andrew Wiggins, Karl Anthony Towns, Zach Lavine are all under 22 years old and will be STARS in this league. They are so young and talented. It's been a long time since the Timberwolves been in the playoffs but that streak ends this year. They sneak into the playoffs as the 8 seed and give the Warriors a run for their money in the first round.
19. New Orleans Pelicans: Anthony Davis solidifies himself as a star.
Anthony Davis is an absolute monster. He's going to be the fave of the NBA for years to come. As long as he stays healthy he'll be in the conversation for MVP. However, the Pelicans will struggle all year because they have nobody else.
20. New York Knicks: Exceed Expectations, Make playoffs
Carmelo Anthony is a star. Kristaps Porzingis is a future star. Derrick Rose, before the injuries, is a former MVP. Joakim Noah is a great power forward and knows the game. Courtney Lee is a good, solid shooting guard. This team can be very good. And they're bench is underrated. This team will exceed, make the playoffs as the 6 seed.
21. Oklahoma City: Russell Westbrook goes off.
In one of the most coward acts of all time, Kevin Durant left the Thunders. Now this is Westbrook's team, and he'll dominate. He's going to absolutely fill up the stats sheets and bring the Thunder to the playoffs with the help of Victor Oladipo. But Westbrook is going to do this himself and do whatever it takes to make Durant know who the better player is. Oh, and Westbrook will beat the Warriors by himself. He might score 75 that game. I'm not kidding.
22. Orlando Magic: Still a year away.
The Magic have a good core. Serge Ibaka, Elfrid Payton, Aaron Gordon are good young players, but they still have a year to figure it out and grow. They'll draft in the lottery again but they can surprise people soon.
23. Philadelphia 76ers. Joel Embiid wins Rookie if the Year.
It's been a long time since the 76ers have been relevant again. However, after two years of being injured Joel Embiid finally will play this year, and he'll dominate. He's 7'2" and strong as hell. He can shoot threes and dream shake anyone. He'll win the ROY by a landslide.
24. Phoenix Suns: Devin Booker rises to a star.
Suns will be horrible, but Devin Booker, the young 20 year old, will prove he'll be a star in the league this year.
25. Portland: Damian Lillard has MVP type season.
Millard has always been a top player in the league, but this year he'll absolutely turn the corner and become a top five player in the league and have a great chance to win MVP. Blazers will also win a playoff series with the help from Lillard and CJ McCollum
26. Sacramento Kings. Continue to be the worst run organization in sports.
The Kings are the Cleveland Browns of the NBA. Horrible coaching, horrible management, horrible ownership with good players. They'll continue to sink and miss the playoffs again.
27. San Antonio Spurs: Kawhi Leonard dominates the league.
Leonard trained with Kobe Bryant over the summer. Good thing for the Spurs, bad for everyone else. Leonard is already a star and training with Kobe makes him that much better. Leonard will carry the Spurs to the Western Conference finals and win Defensive player of the year. Again.
28. Toronto Raptors: Raptors take step back from last year.
Almost every team In the East improved except the Raptors, they stayed the same. They will still be a good team but they'll take a step back as the teams who improved (Celtics and Pacers) pass them. Raptors get the 4 seed in the East.
29. Utah Jazz: don't live up to expectations.
Yes they have a great young core. But to say this team will be the 4 seed in the west is absurd. They have to get to the playoffs first before I can totally respect them.
30. Washington Wizards: Struggle with Chemistry
Bradley Beal and John Wall always butted heads. They both want to be the stars, but they can't share it because of their egos. They have too much talent to not make the playoffs though. They sneak in as the 8 seed.
31. Russell Westbrook wins the MVP and it's not even close. Westbrook flirt with averaging a triple double for the entrie year, but falls just short.
32. Warriors miss the NBA finals and LeBron James wins his 4th ring, cementing his status as one of the best ever, as the Cavaliers defeat the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals
*None of this will actually happen, but we'll see*
