20 Trashy Hair Icons To Look Up To

It's almost like she is trying to be the Long Island version of Dolly Parton!

Being a hair dresser, there are definitely hair colors and hair styles that us cosmetologists consider "Trashy Hair". One of my fellow stylists at the salon where I work was trying to decide how she should color her hair next and her Google search made me laugh. She told me that she wanted to go trashy. She just turned the big 3-0 and feels the need to do something crazy... which is where the trashy hair comes in. She opened up Google and typed in "Kelly Clarkson hair". Kelly Clarkson is the QUEEN of trashy hair! From this, I searched "trashy hair" to see what else showed up. Which is what led to 20 Trashy Hair Icons.

1. Kelly Clarkson

The QUEEN of trashy hair! When Kelly Clarkson won American Idol in 2002, she really brought the chunky highlight and lowlights out, gaining popularity. Originally her chunky coloring was only dark brown and bright white. Soon after, she released her album "Thankful", where she debuted her new addition of bright red lowlights. This is where the "trashy" label has stayed. While it looks pretty good (I can't believe I'm saying that), the problem is that as you shampoo your hair after, the red bleeds into the white blonde and eventually your highlights turn a pink-orange and your red lowlights turn brown. Yet, clients still ask for it, and stylists still love doing it!

2. Nicole Richie

Similar to "The Kelly Clarkson", the Nicole Richie features chocolate brown, bright red, and white blonde. Unlike the other "trashy hair" trends, this focuses on having bright white on top, with red and brown lowlights underneath the hair. Typically this is done by applying bleach on the scalp (making some interesting chemical layers), and then foiling large chunks of red and brown underneath on the long pieces.

3. Nicole Richie 2.0

Though the pictures are very similar, the trends are totally different! Nicole Richie (along with a few other big names of the early 2000s) loved the heck out of hair extensions! I'm not even talking about those beautiful ones they make nowadays... I'm talking about individual bead extensions with "heat resistant" synthetic hair. These were secured in the hair with a bead to existing strands of hair. If done right, they can look so good! But if done wrong, they are trash-fabulous! Nicole made the trend of curling each individual extension so that they are lots of hap-hazard curls all over the place that don't match.

4. Snooki

Snooki was definitely a hair icon when Jersey Shore premiered! Her bump still gives me goosebumps! I loved her!! When her bump debuted, companies made all sorts of products to help you recreate it for yourself. They sold BumpIts (which I'm not ashamed to say that I owned), teasing combs, teasing brushes, instant tease hairsprays, and more. I still tease bumps in my hair almost every day. I have no shame!

5. Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj is an idol. But girl does she ever have crazy hair! And she definitely brought the pop sugar to the emo style of cheetah print hair! Can you imagine hand painting those crazy designs onto hair?! Omg.

5. Steven Tyler

The "Aerosmith" star is definitely an icon in more ways than one! He's known for his avant-garde hairstyles, to say the least. And the one I'm focusing on in this trashy hair parade is his hair feathers! I fell victim to this trend too! And I've thought about adding them back in here recently. The hair feathers are put in with a bead closure. The more colorful, and the crazier the pattern the better!

6. Beyonce Knowles-Carter

Bey. Bey started the Fairy Hair movement! I've seen everyone from grandmas to children walk around with fairy hair. They take a strand of glitter, similar to tinsel, and knot it on to a single strand of hair, and the fairy hair will typically stay in the hair until it grows out. I'm not quite sure if it is necessarily trashy (mainly because children get it done too), but it is obviously a unique hair trend.

7. Christina Aguilera

Oh, Christina! Welcome to another form of trashy hair extensions! Christina Aguilera made braided extensions famous for us pale skinned ladies. She had spiral curled synthetic extensions braided in at the root and then down about two inches. The braid is how the added in hair was secured. Every girl in the early 2000's thought this was the greatest! There were even little machines made by Conair that braided the hair for you!

9. Pamela Anderson

She's known for a lot more than her flirtatious attitude! And I'm talking about her hair! Pamela Anderson adds a lot of volume and a lot of curls to make her hair get the right amount of trashy! It also has a messy, just got out of bed look, which is still huge. And I'm only slightly ashamed to say that as trashy as her hair is, it is also just as timeless. At least for us girls here in the south.

10. Pauly D

I can't write about trashy hair and not include Pauly D! Jersey Shore helped make the DJ famous, but his hair did most of the work for him! I heard him say in an interview once that he rode his motorcycle at 90 mph down the high way once, without a helmet, and it still did not move!

11. Heather Matarazzo

Back in 2010, the Princess Diaries star went from dark brown to blonde. Only one problem.... She wasn't quite blonde. She turned up being more of a strawberry, or red/orange. I'm being 100% petty here, but why would any hairdresser let their client walk out without a toner?!

12. Kylie Jenner

I'm braced for the worst on this one.... but Kylie made the list! Confession: I have had a shadow root, and I do shadow roots on clients often. They love them! But it is pretty trashy. I'm from the south, and we don't call this a fashion statement, we call it roots. And roots are trashy. The Jenner/Kardashians are definitely the queens of this time, but that doesn't forgive them for bringing laziness and roots into fashion! Hello, number 12 on the trashy hair list! Looks like a two year old did it.

13. Kate Gosselin

I feel like no explanation needed. But alas, I must explain. Not only being the "I need to speak with a manager" haircut, Kate Gosselin's hair is like the most extreme inverted bob ever made! It's the exact opposite of the mullet. This thing is mom in the front, psycho in the back. It looks like a pair of clippers at three in the morning after one too many bottles of wine.

14. John Travolta

Let's not even talk about the fact that this is a wig. But I'm just saying that if you have that much money, why do you have a giant M framing your forehead? Why don't you trim those bangs so that it doesn't look like the golden arches? Mr. Travolta, please stop trying a middle part.

15. Miley Cyrus

Miley is known for changing her hair. We could probably sit here all day and talk about the evolution of her hair. My favorite trashy trend that she's set though? Fun Buns! And they look adorable on some girls! Which just kind of makes me mad, if I'm being honest. All I can think of when I see these is that Beetle Juice act she did. Oh goodness!

16. Rachel McAdams

Confused as to how Rachel made it on the trashy hair list? I was too... at first. Though she is known for her class and calm demeanor, McAdams recently went a little cray. She started experimenting with some funky colors, striped in her hair. Mostly she stuck with a pale pink, but after she did this, people were coming in all the time to add a little pizzazz to their typical color too! The idea is anything but trashy, if done the right way and on the right age person. Mid-Thirties is a little trashy though.

17. Billy Ray Cyrus

Billy Ray is such an icon. I love him! Business in the front, party in the back! Just like his daughter, he's a trend setter! No more explanation. Billy Ray is amazing! But lets be real.. it's trashy.

18. Theresa Caputo

This lovely lady right here is the perfect blend of Long Island and Georgia. She's got a new age mullet and that mess is teased up so high you can see through it. Not only that, but it could probably rain and he wouldn't ever feel the water because of the amount of hair spray on her hair! It's almost like she is trying to be the Long Island version of Dolly Parton!

19. Justin Timberlake

It's gonna be May! His frosted tips were one for the books! Mr. Timberlake sent all the kids to the hair salon to get some Ramen Noodle hair just like his! I just can't. Trash.

20. Brittany Spears

Y'all! I'm about five minute away from pulling (another) Brittany Spears melt down. This mess is trash though! She tops it all. End. Of. Story.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
