20 Thoughts Every Balloon Walker Has During The Parade
Business Insider

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade captures the eyes of millions of Americans every Thanksgiving. Who doesn’t love a good parade? They’ve got singers, performers, the Rockettes, and even Santa. Most importantly, they’ve got gigantic balloons of your favorite characters and such. What we may not always see are the large amounts of people under each balloon that are dedicating their time and holding onto a string, allowing for this wonderful event to take place each year. But I wonder what they’re thinking about the whole time…

  • I wonder what would happen if I just let go. There are plenty of other people holding on. Or would it float up with them?
  • It’s so cold. I can’t feel my fingers anymore. Am I even holding the string still? I don’t know.
  • How much farther is there to walk? I think we only have eight blocks left. That’s only four blocks twice which is only two blocks four times. I walk two blocks to get my bagel some mornings. I can do this. I just have to get my bagel four times.
  • I’m going to eat soooo much turkey after this (and ham and cornbread dressing and the good rolls and pie and more pie).
  • Do we get a discount at Macy’s for doing this? I could really use some new boots.
  • What character am I even holding?
  • I wonder if I can get a picture with some of the Rockettes after this is over. Everyone would be so jealous. I definitely have to do it so I can set it as my Facebook profile picture.
  • I swear that guy in the back better not let go. I do not feel like getting an aerial view of the city today.
  • I hope someone is recording this so I can watch it later and find myself. I’m on TV. Momma I made it!
  • Well this will definitely spice up my resume.
  • I wish I could have been with the Clifford balloon animal. That was my favorite book as a kid. I love that big, red dog.
  • Who wants to take a selfie?
  • 100 slices of pie in the fridge, 100 slices of pie. Take one out, pass it around, 99 slices of pie in the fridge…
  • I think Selena Gomez is singing on the float behind me. Oh my goodness! I see her!
  • I’m going to need a nap after this. A nap by the fireplace with a blanket sounds nice right now.
  • Do we get to pop the balloon after the parade is over? That’d be cool.
  • Who makes these things? Like where do you learn to make a huge balloon? I didn’t learn that in college.
  • I’m great at this. We haven’t hit any buildings or let it fly away. Can I be a professional balloon walker?
  • I think I see the end of the parade. We’ve almost made it. We’re so close.
  • Well that was fun.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.
