20 Things I Learned Before 20

20 Things I Learned Before 20
Caitlin Rounds

I recently turned 20 and although I haven't spent an extremely long time on this Earth, I feel that I have learned some pretty important things worth sharing.

Here's 20 things I learned before 20.

1. Learning self-love is extremely important.

So long as you exist, you will always be in your body. So learn to love and nurture it, you only get one. Health of the mind, body and spirit is everything.

2. The people who wrong you will help you grow.

Not everyone you encounter will be a good person and that is okay. There are people in this world who will do you wrong and hurt you, but don't let these experiences destroy you, use them to rebuild.

3. Change is inevitable, but it's good for you.

Change will happen whether you want it to or not. Change forces us out of our comfort zone, it allows us to escape what is toxic and be introduced to fresh air.

4. Go outside more often.

Being outside is good for your mental health, trust me.

5. Karma is a legitimate thing.

Karma forgives but it doesn't forget. You will never escape this life unpunished or unrewarded.

6. Fail young, fail cheap.

Now is the best time to do what scares you, even if it results in failure.

7. Small victories will keep you going.

Not much goes according to plan in life, but don't forget to celebrate what does.

8. Not everyone you meet is meant to stay; however, you meet everyone for a reason.

You encounter everyone for a reason, nobody is a waste of your time.

9. You're exactly where you're meant to be.

This is a motto to live by. Embrace whatever you're going through whether it be the best time of your life or the worst.

10. Take pictures.

We as humans cannot possibly remember everything, so take pictures of whatever it is that matters to you.

11. Learn to be alone.

This is a big one. It is not my belief that humans are meant to be alone, but we will all experience a time in which we are. Don't run from this.

12. Eat better food.

13. It's okay to be selfish.

20 is YOUNG. It's a time to build, grow and find what you love. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

14. Nobody really knows what they're doing.

Some people are just better at pretending they know what they're doing than others.

15. You cannot save or fix anyone.

You cannot help someone who does not want to be helped, nor is it your job to heal everyone.

16. You are you and that is your superpower.

Take pride in your individuality.

17. Wake up early.

Waking up early will truly help you to see and experience more, everything will be brighter.

18. Be more spontaneous.

The best memories are often unplanned.

19. Love more, this world desperately needs it.

We live in world full of negativity and hate, so love more. Make it your mission to smile at strangers, give compliments and make people feel loved.

20. You will never get out of this life alive.

We are not perfect people. We will love, we will hurt, we will cry, we will laugh and we will experience. There is no secret formula for the perfect life. Life becomes meaningful and valuable when you realize that it is short. Live a great story and treat everyday as if it is your last. Your time here is limited and you will never escape this world alive, so be a person that is impossible to forget.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
