20 Things You Should Thank Your Best Friends For
Ashlyn Wing

If you're lucky enough, throughout your life you'll meet your best friends who eventually become your built-in sisters. They're the first ones you call when something exciting happens, and the people you'd drop everything for if they needed it- knowing that they would do the same. You're probably so close that you often forget to appreciate all the small things your best friends do, but every once in awhile they need a reminder of just how great they are. Here's a thank you list to my best friends:

1. For not only being your best friend, but her family becoming your family as well.

2. For never blackmailing you with the ugly Snapchats you send her.

3. For listening to you talk about the same boy..over, and over, and over again.

4. But, being brutally honest and telling you that the boy really isn't the end of the world and you can do better anyways.

5. For never judging you when you're wearing sweatpants, yesterday's makeup, and greasy hair.

6. For letting you call and complain about how stressed out you are, knowing that she is feeling the exact same way.

7. For always letting you have a bite of whatever she's eating...without you asking her first.

8. For forgiving you when you didn't listen to her advice..even if she told you the same thing 500 times.

9. But, also for not saying "I told you so" when she ended up being right about everything in the first place.

10. For always having a place in her heart, plans, and bed for you.

11. But, for not getting upset when you cancel plans to stay at your boyfriends, or make room in your heart for others.

12. For being skeptical of every guy who tries to enter your life because who could really be good enough for her best friend?

13. For always running your errands with you, even if it isn't exciting and she could definitely be doing something else.

14. For standing by your side at the hardest times of your life, not judging you for a second.

15. For not making you feel like you two need to be doing something to actually have fun together.

16. For hitting send on the text message that you were too scared to send.

17. For agreeing to retake a picture for the 10th time because you didn't like the way you looked.

18. For always telling you which selfie looks best to post on Instagram.

19. For dropping everything she's doing just because she knows you're having a bad day and need her.

20. For always agreeing to eat junk food with you, even when you both said you were trying to eat healthy.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
