Before going to college, people had always told me things such as always go to class, don’t put your drink down at a party, get involved, etc. Despite all of the "mother knows best" moments that has been reiterated into my mind, there are some things you just can't learn from the comfort of your home. Here are a few lessons I have learned from my time in college thus far.

1. Don’t buy your books from the bookstore.

If you do, you will end up spending $600 on three books that you will never use. Find out whether or not you actually need the book for the class because many times, you will have teachers that never use the book. Renting your books is the way to go.

2. Don't be afraid to have a dance party with yourself.

When life gets too stressful because you have four tests and two papers due in the next three days: dance it out.

3. You never sleep anymore.

Just accept it. Take naps often.

4. Become a pong master.

What is more embarrassing than someone who doesn’t know how to throw a ping pong ball in a cup? Nothing.

5. Exercise.

"The freshman fifteen” hits you like how Regina George got hit by a bus. Also, working out makes you feel great.

6. It's okay to cry...even in public.

I promise you that everyone understands how you feel.

7. Selling your clothes is a completely normal way for a college student to earn some extra cash.

Embrace the dollar store and dollar menu.

8. No one cares how you look for class.

You don’t have to do your makeup every single day. Wearing Nike shorts and a t-shirt is completely acceptable.

9. College is definitely not what it’s made out to be in the movies.

Sorry guys, there isn’t a Zac Efron raging party.

10. Two-strapping your backpack is considered normal.

And cool.

11. Beware of the caf.

Buy as much Ramen and soup because the cafeteria food always tastes like plastic.

12. Don't take eight AM classes.

They are equivalent to getting punched in the face.

13. It's okay to watch Netflix.

Netflix is your best friend and will always be there for you.

14. Don’t forget to do your laundry.

If you don't you will be searching through your dirty clothes trying to find the somewhat clean clothes to wear.

15. Don’t drink more than you can handle.

No one wants to be that person who always throws up or who gets super sloppy every single time they drink.

16. Take advantage of your free time and study.

You will regret it the night before you have a test and you don’t know any of the material.

17. Learn how to be the one with the good pregame playlist.

Also, download and pay for Spotify because no one likes hearing commercials while pre-gaming.

18. DO NOT SHOW PDA AT ALL WHILE WALKING TO CLASS.

Holding hands, kissing, and all that other relationship stuff is unpleasing to see and is unnecessary. This is probably the most disturbing thing someone can witness, especially at 8 o’clock in the morning.

19. Sometimes you meet your best friend in the bathroom at a frat house.

Hey, that is okay.

20. Learn how to have fun.

Because as difficult as college can be, it is important to find out who you are and who you want to be in the future.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
