Growing up having a parent that was or is in the military is tough. Your day starts before the sun comes up, your parents ask for every detail of every plan you make with friends, and you're the first one to show up to pretty much everything. It's a whole other world. You know terminology no one else has ever heard of and the family clock works on 24 hours, not 12. Everything is different, but in some cases, it's better. Even after your parents get out, the military values you grow up learning stay with you and it's great.

Here are 20 things you know to be true if you grew up as a military brat:

1. Being 10 minutes early to something means you're late.

2. Anyone older than you is addressed as "ma'am" or "sir."

3. Pretty much all military movies are ruined for you because they're so inaccurate.

4. When you get in trouble in school, you knew your parents' are going to be called into their commanding officer's office.

5. The phrases "0-dark-30" and "1400 hours" are commonly used.

6. You always have MRE's laying around.

7. You have no idea what a grocery store is.

8. When people ask you where you're from you don't even know how to respond.

9. Every time you leave to go somewhere with your parents they say "get your gear" and "move out."

10. You use the phonetic alphabet.

11. Lots and lots of push-ups.

12. You've learned all the words to a hilarious, and sometimes inappropriate cadence call.

13. You know the layout of all your friends' houses because they're all the same.

14. You NEVER run out of water.

15. The trunk of all of your cars looks something like this:

16. Your 21st Birthday will be your worst because it means your military ID and base privileges are being canceled.

17. Odds are when you grow up, someone who now has high-level security baby-sat you once.

18. You refer to 6:00 p.m. as 1800.

19. You have the utmost respect for anyone who has ever served.

20. You wouldn't change your childhood for anything.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
