When you turn 20, you think that you are automatically supposed to become more mature and knowledgable; this isn't true at all. Everyone is in different places, going through highs and lows in life. It's not your age that will make you a better person, it's your experiences along the way that will.
1. Surround yourself with good people.
Life is too short to be around anyone that will bring you down. If you stay around people who have the same goals and expectations as you, life will be good.
2. Don’t waste your time on people who don’t care.
There’s bound to be some people that don’t like you, and that’s OK. You're not here to impress everyone—focus on your own happiness first.
3. It’s better to have a few friends you can count on, than a bunch that you can’t.
You’ll eventually find the group of friends who will do anything for you, from answering your calls at three in the morning for the smallest of reasons or bringing you food when you're too lazy to make something.
4. It’s OK to not know what you want to do with your life.
It’s also OK to change your major three times until you find out what you’re good at—this is all part of the college experience and it happens to everyone. Don't stress.
5. Don’t compare yourself to other people.
The most unique part about you, is you.
6. It’s never too late to try new things.
This is how you realize what you have passion for, and what you absolutely hate.
7. Take risks.
If you pass up opportunities, chances are, you’ll end up regretting it in the long run. There have been so many times I said no to things because I was nervous or it was something that I wasn't used to, and I wonder if I would have grown to enjoy those opportunities if I took the chances of doing them.
8. Everyone makes mistakes.
It’s going to happen, no matter how old or young you are. This is a part of life and how you learn.
9. Get into good habits.
Whether this is saving money or starting a new diet, it’s better late than never.
10. Listen to your parents; they know what they’re talking about.
You’ll eventually realize why they didn’t let you have sleepovers on school nights or hang out with that group of people that you thought had good intentions.
11. BuzzFeed and E! don’t count as reading the news.
As much as we would like to think these are real sources of news stories, they’re not. Start watching the news—as boring as it may be, it can be useful.
12. Don’t take on more than you can handle.
You’ll have plenty of time in the real world to do this, there’s no point in starting early.
13. It's OK to stay in during the weekend.
You don’t have to go to every party—they're overrated, anyway. If you think you're missing out, Snapchat will reassure you that you're most likely not.
14. Take your classes seriously.
You only get one shot at school. Work hard now, so life will be easier later.
15. You’re extremely lucky if your parents help you out financially.
Thank them every once in a while, no matter if it’s lending you money when you need it, or paying your college tuition. Remember, they don’t need to do those things, they want to.
16. Read the books your teachers assign you.
You'll be grateful that you read when you have a house of your own that is filled with a bunch of your favorite books. They're not all bad, so think twice, because it might come in handy one day.
17. You’re in control of your life.
If you don’t like the way something is going, change it.
18. If you want something bad enough, work hard enough to earn it.
Nothing good comes easy, so work hard from the start.
19. Don’t forget about your old friends when you meet new ones.
Old friends are the ones that have been with you through thick and thin, so don’t forget about them just because someone new comes along.
20. You don’t know everything, but you’ll never need to.
Your family and friends are there for you to help you learn from mistakes, and make sure more don’t happen.
