20 Things I've Learned By Age 20

I feel like I've aged ten years just this semester.

I don't know if anyone's had a semester or period of their life like this, but I honestly feel like I've aged ten years since the start of this semester. There were so many life lessons in store for me in the past few months. Some were very hard to learn, but ultimately I do feel as though I've come out of each situation a better and stronger person who's more equipped to deal with whatever drama the next semester throws at me. I'm turning 20 in less than two weeks, which is crazy, so I decided to put together a list of 20 things I've learned--most, but not all from this past semester--in the first 20 years of my life.

1. Don't beat yourself up every time something goes wrong.

2. Because sometimes, it's not your fault. It's just bad luck.

3. People will take more than you have to give.

4. So you have to learn to draw the line somewhere.

5. Let people vent to you, and just listen. It means they trust you.

6. Try to find a passion outside your social life. Friends are important, but there is more to life.

7. It's hard to find the balance between going out and staying in, but when in doubt, go out and have fun. Give your future self some memories.

8. Stop holding people to such high standards. They're only human.

9. Don't put anyone on a pedestal or view them as perfect.

10. When you get close to someone, you will inevitably see their "dark side" at some point. Love them anyway.

11. You are the one who has to live with your choices at the end of the day, so don't let anyone pressure you into or out of something.

12. Friends who judge you are not friends.

13. Some people can't have fun unless they are excluding somebody. Don't be one of those people!

14. Advocate for yourself in all situations. You have to have your own back.

15. Don't let the fear of missing out lead you to making bad decisions.

16. Learning to say "no" is one of the most valuable lessons you will learn.

17. Remember that you never know what someone may be going through at any given time, so be careful what you say to them.

18. Be overly sympathetic. Care too much. It's so much better than being numb.

19. Competitiveness will kill your relationships. You don't have to one up anyone...ever...in any way.

20. Never take life too seriously. Learn to laugh at yourself.

I'm still young and I have a lot more to learn...but I thought I'd get this list going as a start for anyone who might be going through a similar stage in life. 2016 was truly the year of realization.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
