20 Things I've learned In 20 Years

It took me 20 years to figure some of these out.

1. It's okay to move away for college.

Most high school kids are afraid to move away for college because they don't want to leave their parents or friends. Don't be afraid. Just do it. You will thank me later, and your real friends will still keep in contact with you wherever you go after you graduate.

2. Things won't always happen the way you want them to.

You may have your whole life planned out perfectly, but I guarantee you it probably wont happen exactly like you think it will. But that's okay.

3. You should always treasure your friends.

Your real friends are always there for you and you should always return the favor for them.

4. Be nice to everyone.

Whether you've had an amazing day or an extremely awful one, you should always be nice to those around you.

5. Let go of things that have a negative impact on you.

Sometimes there will be things (or people) in your life that have a negative impact on your life. You have to learn to let go of those people no matter how hard it may be because the outcome will always be better.

6. Never lose sight of God.

Isaiah 41:10 says "Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

7. Everything happens for a reason.

Marilyn Monroe once said, "People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.” I believe this to be 100% true.

8. Don't be afraid to try new things.

Get out of your comfort zone. If you want to go skydiving, DO IT. Don't be constantly suppressed when you're older by your thoughts of "I should have done that."

9. Be there for others.

Everyone needs someone. Try your best to be there for others when they are feeling down or just need someone in general.

10. Dress better. Look better. Feel better.

I've come to realize that if I dress better, I have more confidence and often perform better in the classroom.

11. Don't procrastinate.

This speaks for itself.

12. It's okay to go to a Mexican restuarant 3 days in one week.

Chips and queso is probably my all time favorite food, so I feel as though if i want to eat it multiple times a week there is nothing wrong with that.

13. Stop impulse buying.

I need to stop going inside stores period because I come out with multiple items that I think I need but I really don't need. I go inside Walmart for chicken, and come out with a scented candle.

14. Always keep a calendar and a to-do list.

Doing this simple task keeps me organized and helps me not be so forgetful with certain things

15. Smile at people.

You have no idea what impact smiling at people can make. You could turn someone's entire day around with just a simple smile.

16. Stay away from the mall as much as possible.

This branches off of number 13. Stop spending so much money.

17. Make someone's day.

People could be going through many things but still not show it on the outside. A good idea to make someone's day would be to pay it forward.

18. Don't stop until you reach your goals.

No matter how many people tell you that you can't, don't stop until you achieve your goals. Prove everyone who doubted you, wrong.

19. Help those in need.

This doesn't always mean give money to those less fortunate, but it also means lending a helping hand to those who need one.

20. Take plenty of pictures.

A wise person once told me, "If you don't take pictures, it's as if it didn't happen." She was totally right so i've learned to capture almost everything I do no matter how much people get upset at my constant posts.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
