20 Things I'd Rather Be Than "Nice"

God calls us to be so much more.

When people talk about me to others, they say I'm nice. They say I am a nice and good girl. For a while, that did bother me because I wanted to prove people wrong. I wanted people to see so much more of me than, "the nice girl in English class." Over the last couple of years, I've grown accustomed to being that girl, but there is still a part of me wishing people would think more of me because there is so much more to me. When people ask about me, there are many words that I wish they would use to describe me. I want people to see Christ in me. Here are some things I would rather be than, "nice."

1. Kind

"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you," (Ephesians 4:32).

Being gentle and compassionate means so much more to me than just being a nice person.

2. Inspiring

When people meet me, I want them to be filled with love and confidence.

3. Humble

"But He gives more grace. Therefore, it says, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble,'" (James 4:6).

I don't want to draw attention to my abilities, but for people to appreciate them without being boastful.

4. Hopeful

"The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love," (Psalm 147:11).

5. Considerate

I want to always be thoughtful and attentive to other people because they deserve that.

6. Welcoming

When people need someone to talk to or someone to go to, I want to be on their minds. I want them to feel totally comfortable coming to me with anything they need.

7. Gracious

Grace, simply put, is undeserved, unmerited, and unearned favor. I want to be gracious, like Christ is in my life everyday.

8. Radiant

"For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shown in our hearts to give light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ," (2 Corinthians 5:6).

I want the light Jesus has given me to be glowing for everyone to see.

9. Passionate

I don't want to take things lightly. I want to be ardent in what I do, because everything I do is for the Lord. I want to glorify Him in my job, my relationships, and all aspects of my life.

10. Steadfast

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing," (James 1:2-4).

11. Joyous

"A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones," (Proverbs 17:22).

God said it Himself! Being joyful is medicinal. I mean, how much more do you need?

12. Hard-Working

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men," (Colossians 3:23).

My dad taught me the value of hard work, as did my Heavenly Father.

13. Honorable

"Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things," (Hebrews 13:18).

I want to be honest and ethical is everything I do.

14. Happy

It's not hard to put on a good face and say that everything is alright, but it is hard to be truly content with your life, even when bad things are happening.

15. Boundless in Love

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind... You shall love your neighbor as yourself," (Matthew 22: 37-39).

I want to love so much that people can see the love I have and so I can be a light to this world.

16. Fascinating

When people meet me and talk to me, I want them to be interested and captivated by my words and my countenance.

17. Peaceful

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid," (John 14:27).

18. Adventurous

I want to get out of my little box and travel. I want to be brave.

19. Seeking

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and these things will be given to you as well," (Matthew 6:33).

God will provide for my every need, as long as I am pursuing Him.

20. Christ-like

The goal for me, and hopefully for all Christians, is to strive to be like Christ in all that we do.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
