20 Things I Forgot To Thank My Roommate For This Year

College isn't easy, and this is a given. What also isn't easy is moving in with a person you've never met before and trusting them not to steal your stuff or kill you in your sleep. Finding a roommate that you enjoy isn't always easy. It's not like you can test out living with someone before you come to school, especially if you choose to go random. Whether you chose your roommate on Facebook, went random, or knew them already, the fact of the matter is that living with someone is a whole different story.

It can be super hard to find someone who you can compatibly live with and who doesn't make you want to pull your hair out. What's even harder is finding a roommate who actually becomes your best friend. Some people get stuck with roommate they definitely can't live with, and others make a life long friend out of their roommate.

If your roommate has become your best friend without even trying, then the list will not only be relatable, but it will make you gush up about leaving your BFF this summer:

1. Thank you for crying with me when it's been a long day.

2. Thank you for always checking in on my life and showing that you actually care.

3. Thank you for not getting mad at me when I don't take out the trash for 3 weeks.

4. Also, thank you for not getting mad at me when my room is messy 5 out of 7 days of the week.

5. Thank you for letting me keep the lights on when I have to stay up studying till 3 am.

6. Thank you for letting me eat all of your food.

7. Thank you for knowing when all my exams and classes are and wishing me luck.

8. Thank you for all the times you've ran and got me something if I didn't feel good (or was feeling lazy).

9. Thank you for trusting me and letting me into your life as more than just a roommate.

10. Thank you for all of our inside jokes that make me laugh every time.

11. Thank you for hating and liking the same people as me.

12. Thank you for making sure my outfit and hair looks okay every morning.

13. Thank you for being careful not to wake me up when you get up earlier than me.

14. Thank you for all the times you've taken care of me when I needed you most.

15. Thank you for double checking with me before you do basically anything (even though you definitely don't have to).

16. Thank you for keeping all my secrets and letting me open up to you.

17. Thank you for accepting all the strange/abnormal things I do.

18. ...and for not judging me for eating 24/7.

19. Thank you for putting up with my odd napping hours.

20. Most of all, thank you for making our room feel like home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
