20 Things To Do Before School Starts

Like it or not, we'll be going back to school soon and that means saying goodbye to our carefree days of summer. However, if you have already finished your school's summer work, you may be wondering how to spend these precious weeks before school starts. Well, here are some ideas of what to do until you hit the books.

1. Get together with friends.

Once you all go back to school, it will be hard to find time to hang out, especially if you all go to different colleges.

2. Go shopping.

Who doesn't like shopping? Maybe start your back to school shopping early!

3. Make a reading list.

Your local library should have plenty of suggestions, or ask your friends what they're reading.

4. Start a book club.

Once you have a reading list, pick a book with your friends and read it together.

5. Go hiking.

Be sure to enjoy nature before you're stuck in a classroom all day.

6. Go to the beach.

You'll want to get at least one more beach day in!

7. Start writing a book.

Write a little bit each day and you could have a short story done before you know it.

8. Make a blog.

It could be about sports, music, a hobby. Literally anything you want to write about.

9. Go to the gym.

It might be hard to find time to go once school starts, so hit the gym before you hit the books.

10. Go for a walk.

Maybe catch some Pokémon along the way.

11. Get a job.

Some places might have already hired people, but with college students leaving soon, high school students can fill their spots.

12. Learn to paint.

Grab some friends and go to a paint bar.

13. Complete a coloring book.

You can buy coloring books anywhere, so try to fill one in.

14. Solve a Rubik's Cube.

There are plenty of solutions online.

15. See a movie.

Whether it's a drive-in theater or not, there's always a great movie to see.

16. Bake some cupcakes.

Or cookies. Or anything really.

17. Play laser tag.

It'll hurt less than paintball.

18. Make a garden.

You coould grow flowers, vegetables, whatever you want.

19. Visit a theme park.

Who doesn't love theme parks?

20. Pack for college.

After you finish everything on this list, start packing for college.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
