20 Things Every 20 Year Old Should Keep In MInd

In honor of my 20th birthday this past weekend, I decided to share some of the most important things that I've learned over the last two decades. From personal experiences to advice from my mother to quotes that have changed my life, here are 20 things every 20 year old should keep in mind.

1. Not everyone is going to stay forever.

Friendships don't always last as long as we thought they would, my mom used to say "people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime."

2. It's okay to not want to go out every single night.

Going out and partying was a part-time job for me in high school, but at 20 years old I have definitely mellowed out.

3. Don't try too hard to fit in.

If you haven't already, you WILL find your place - just be yourself.

4. Learn from your mistakes.

Don't be discouraged when things go wrong, instead learn from it so it doesn't happen again.

5. You don't have to have it all figured out.

I'm going into my third year of college and I'm on my second major..it's really okay to not have a clue where you want to go in life. You'll get there when you get there, take your time.

6. Music really can brighten your day.

Listen to your favorite song when you wake up every morning and you'll set yourself up for a positive day ahead.

7. Don't stress out over your grades.

It's okay to want a good GPA, but one bad grade isn't going to destroy you.

8. Get off your phone.

There's a world outside your handheld device waiting for you to explore it.

9. Everyone's not out to get you.

I'm not one to talk because I, but I'm really working on putting my trust into certain people.

10. Be a morning person.

Waking up early and making the most of your day can sometimes feel extra rewarding.

11. But you deserve a lazy day every once in a while.

It's okay to sleep in til 12 sometimes.

12. Don't be stupid.

We all make dumb decisions every now and then, but it's time to grow up and take some responsibilities.

13. It's okay not to be okay.

I got this one from a Jessie J song, but this song changed my outlook on life. It really is okay to break down once in a while.

14. Be selfish.

I've always considered myself to be selfless, but over the years I've learned that I'm important too. Put yourself first - your happiness, your health, your life.

15. Don't waste your money.

I'm not saying don't spend your money, but there are deals everywhere - look for them. And negotiate...if someone tries over charging you, don't let it slide.

16. With that being said, save your money.

Start a change jar. I have one for "Tattoo Money," But don't cheat and take money out when you think you need it. I'll be getting my next tattoo in no time.

17. Don't neglect your family.

You're at the point where you're beginning to transition into actual adulthood, but it's okay to ditch your friends and take your little brother to paint ceramics or get dinner with your parents. They'll appreciate it more than you know.

18. It's not too late to pick up a new hobby.

I just recently decided I wanted to play the piano. Follow your heart and follow your dreams, you can really do anything with this beautiful life you were given.

19. Stand up for what you believe in.

Don't lay low, stand up and voice your opinion. You can make a difference in yours or somebody else's life.

20. And the countdown begins!

Only 356 days (or less) until you're 21 - hang in there, it'll be here before you know it.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
