20 Songs That Changed My Life

In life, we all go through situations that shape us into the people we are going to be for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, some of these situations are obstacles that we have to learn to overcome - it's inevitable. Everyone has their own set of coping mechanisms that they use to keep pushing forward. For me, one of these outlets has always been music - to say that it has had the power to heal me in some of the most difficult situations would be an understatement. There's just something about throwing some headphones on in the midst of all the stress and chaos that has always been extremely cathartic to me. Here are some lines from just 20 of the songs (straight out of one of my favorite playlists) that have quite literally changed my life!

1. Who You Are - Jessie J

"Don't lose who you are in the blur of the stars

Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing

It's okay not to be okay

Sometimes its hard

To follow your heart

But tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising"

2. Fix You - Coldplay

"Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you"

3. Reaper - Sia

"You came to take me away

So close I was to heaven's gates

But no baby, no baby not today

You tried to track me down

You followed me like the darkest cloud

But no baby, No baby not today"

4. Bad Day - Daniel Powter

"Cause you had a bad day

You're taking one down

You sing a sad song just to turn it around

You say you don't know

You tell me don't lie

You work at a smile, and you go for a ride

You had a bad day

The camera don't lie

You're coming back down, and you really don't mind

You had a bad day

You had a bad day"

5. How To Save a Life - The Fray

"Where did I go wrong?

I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life"

6. Give Me Love - Ed Sheeran

"You know I'll fight my corner

And that tonight I'll call ya

After my blood is drowning in alcohol

I just wanna hold ya

My my, my my

Oh give me love"

7. Skinny Love - Birdy

"And I told you to be patient,

And I told you to be fine

And I told you to be balanced,

And I told you to be kind

And in the morning I'll be with you,

But it will be a different kind

Cause I'll be holding all the tickets,

And you'll be owning all the fines""

8. Daughters - John Mayer

"Fathers, be good to your daughters

Daughters will love like you do

Girls become lovers

Who turn into mothers

So mothers, be good to your daughters too"

9. Latch - Sam Smith

"Now I've got you in my space,

I won't let go of you

Got you shackled in my embrace,

I'm latching on to you"

10. Home - Daughtry

"I'm going home

To the place where I belong

Where you love has always been enough for me

I'm not running from

No I think you got me all wrong

I don't regret this life I chose for me

But these places and these faces are getting old

So I'm coming home"

11. Stitch By Stitch - Javier Colon

"There and back, there's no doubt

Your touch makes me whole again

I give you all my pieces broken

In your hands, there's nothing that you can't fix

My heart is frayed, my scars are open

So put me back together now

Stitch by stitch"

12. Listen - Beyoncé

"Listen to the song here in my heart

A melody I start, but I will complete

Now I am done believing you

You don't know what I'm feeling

I'm more than what you made of me

I followed the voice you think you gave to me

But now i gotta find my own

My own"

13. A Little Too Much - Shawn Mendes

"Sometimes it all gets a little too much

But you gotta realize that soon the fog will clear up

And you don't have to be afraid

Because we're all the same

And we know that sometimes, it all gets a little too much"

14. Let It Go - James Bay

"I used to recognize myself

It's funny how reflections change

When we're becoming something else

I think it's time to walk away

So come on let it go

Just let it be

Why don't you be you

And I'll be me"

15. Shooting Star - Kari Kimmel

"I learned I'm a shooting star

And no one can change who we are

No one can take that away

I know that I'm good enough, and I know that I'm beautiful

And no one can take that away"

16. Life Is Getting Better - Javier Colon

"Hey, don't you know?

Hey, can't you feel there's good times 'round the corner?

Life is getting better all he time

As long as we're together,

Everything's gonna be alright

I see it

I feel it

I know it

Life is getting better all the time"

17. Let It Be - The Beatles

"When I find myself in times of trouble

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

And in my hour of darkness

She is standing right in front of me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be"

18. Someone's Watching Over Me - Hilary Duff

"So I won't give up, no I won't break down

Sooner than it seems, life turns around

And I will be strong, even if it all goes wrong

When I'm standing in the dark I still believe

Someone's watching over me"

19. Lot To Learn - Luke Christopher

"Got your finger on the trigger and you're starin' at the mirror

Don't you shoot, that ain't you now

Cause on the outside you pretendin'

But you hurtin' on the inner

What's the truth, what's the truth now?"

20. Change - Christina Aguilera

"Waiting for a change to set us free

Waiting for the day when you can be you and I can be me

Waiting for hope to come around

Waiting for the day that hate is lost and love is found"

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
