20 Songs Every Former Emo Kid Remembers

Everyone remembers their "emo phase." We all did it—the dramatic side-bangs, the weird, clip-in highlights, the endless band t-shirts. Don't forget the black skinny jeans! In addition to these hilarious fashion faux pas, every emo kid was obsessed with alternative music. The following songs were probably blasted in your childhood bedroom with posters of each band covering every inch of your walls (to your family's disdain).

1. I'm Not Okay (I Promise) by My Chemical Romance

"Forget about the dirty looks,
the photographs your boyfriend took.
You said you read me like a book,
but the pages are all torn and frayed."

2. I Write Sins Not Tragedies by Panic! at the Disco

"Oh, well, imagine
as I'm pacing the pews in a church corridor
and I can't help but to hear, no
but I can't help but to hear an exchanging of words."

3. This Ain't A Scene, It's an Arm's Race by Fall Out Boy

"I wrote the gospel on giving up
(You look pretty sinking),
but the real bombshells have already sunk.
(Prima donnas of the gutter)
At night we're painting your trash gold while you sleep,
Crashing not like hips or cars.
No, more like p-p-p-parties."

4. Fat Lip by Sum 41

"We like having fun at other peoples' expense, and
cutting people down is just a minor offense.
It's none of your concern.
I guess I'll never learn.
I'm sick of being told to wait my turn."

5. Dammit by Blink-182

"And it's happened once again.
I'll turn to a friend,
someone that understands,
sees through the master plan."

6. Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard

"If I could find you now,
things would get better.
We could leave this town and run forever.
Let your waves crash down on me
and take me away."

7. The Kill (Bury Me) by 30 Seconds to Mars

"What if I fell to the floor,
couldn't take this anymore?
What would you do?"

8. Crushcrushcrush by Paramore

"If you wanna play it like a game,
well, come on, come on, let's play.
'Cause I'd rather waste my life pretending
than have to forget you for one whole minute."

9. Miserable At Best by Mayday Parade

"Compared to your eyes,
nothing shines quite as bright.
And when I look to the sky,
it's not mine, but I want it so."

10. Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't) by All Time Low

"'Cause you left me, police scene, chalkline.
Tequila shots in the dark scene of the crime.
Suburban livin' with the feelin' that I'm givin' up
everything for you."

11. Move Along by The All-American Rejects

"So, a day when you've lost yourself completely
could be a night when your life ends.
Such a heart that will lead you to deceiving.
All the pain held in your
hands are shaking cold.
Your hands are mine to hold."

12. Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne

"He was a boy, and she was a girl.
Can I make it any more obvious?
He was a punk, and she did ballet.
What more can I say?"

13. The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls

"We'll scream loud at the top of our lungs,
and they'll think it's just 'cause we're young.
And we'll feel so alive."

14. Face Down by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

"Cover up with makeup in the mirror.
Tell yourself that it's never gonna happen again.
You cry alone, and then he swears he loves you."

15. In the End by Linkin Park

"Time is a valuable thing.
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings.
Watch it count down to the end of the day.
The clock ticks life away."

16. I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie

"Love of mine,
someday you will die,
but I'll be close behind.
I'll follow you into the dark."

17. Teenagers by My Chemical Romance

"Because the drugs never work,
they're gonna give you a smirk,
'cause they've got methods of keeping you clean.
They're gonna rip up your heads,
your aspirations to shreds,
another cog in the murder machine."

18. 1985 by Bowling For Soup

"Bring back Springsteen, Madonna, way before Nirvana.
There was U2, and Blondie, and music still on MTV.
Her two kids in high school, they tell her that she's uncool,
'cause she's still preoccupied with 19, 19, 1985."

19. Pretty Handsome Awkward by the Used

"Your dream vacation,
small hostage refuge.
A work in progress.
You bleed just like you puke while running a mile."

20. What's My Age Again? by Blink-182

"That's about the time she walked away from me.
Nobody likes you when you're 23,
when you still act like you're in freshman year.
What the hell is wrong with me?"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
