20 SIMPLE THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE

There are three sides to every story.

20 SIMPLE THINGS I KNOW TO BE TRUE

According to a TED Talk I recently watched from spoken word poet Sarah Kay, not everyone is comfortable when starting to write poems, but everyone can write lists. When she began teaching classes on writing poetry, she had her students do just this: create a list of 10 things they know to be true. While I admit I had trouble in high school writing and sharing things I wrote with my peers, I have always been very good at writing lists. After a series of tough days, and weeks, I decided I would try writing my own list of things I know to be true in my life.

1. My siblings are my best friends.

2. Tattoos should be considered fine art.

3. Baristas don't get thanked enough.

4. Not everyone will stay in your life. You need to learn when to let them go.

5. Most songs sound better on vinyl.

6. People won't always be kind, not even the ones who said they could never be mean to you.

7. Astrology gets taken way too seriously sometimes.

8. Sometimes all I need is a change of scenery (it's the Sagittarius in me).

9. Violins, light rain, and genuine laughter are the best sounds in the entire world.

10. Midnight driving is the best way to clear your head.

11. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing with my life, and I am still trying to figure out how to be okay with that.

12. There are few problems that my Nana's mashed potatoes can't fix.

13. I will never be satisfied with my body.

14. Mental disorders are nothing to glamorize or take lightly.

15. Lilo & Stitch is the most underrated Disney movie ever.

16. My family has given me way more than I deserve.

17. There are always three sides to every story.

18. Money is better spent on experiences rather than things.

19. Friends should always be quality over quantity.

20. "Years, lovers, and glasses of wine: these things should not be counted." - Anthony Capella

Whether or not I want to admit that these are true all of the time, I know that there are important life lessons that go along with each thing on this list. Some of them represent times when I was at my lowest and others came after days when I was nothing but happy. Although I could have gone on and on about these different things, I know that these are 20 of the most important things I have come to know over my (almost) 20 years on this earth.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.

Where do we begin when we start talking about our roommates? You practically spend every moment with them, they become your second family and they deal with you at your best and at your absolute worst. They are there to make you laugh just a little harder, cry a little less and make each day a little better. We often forget to thank them for the little things that they do to make college even a tiny bit easier and more fun. This list of 26 things are what you should thank your roommates for right this minute and every day that you live with them.
