20 Signs You've Found Your Best Friend

Friends are the best, and best friends are beyond the best. During your time at Fairfield, you'll be making friendships that will last the rest of your life. Here are 20 signs you’ve found your best friend.

1. You talk about anything and everything.
The topic of conversation can literally be anything like Why the sky is blue. You can find any topic fascinating without making it awkward small talk.

2. Nothing is ever weird.
Anything can be expected when you’re together. Things like taking their spoon and eating their ice cream, talking in weird voices or laughing at everything isn’t out of the norm. You are truly open and yourself, because you know that they will never judge you. If anything, they’ll follow along.

3. You harass each other.
You can poke them incessantly or send them millions of messages in two seconds. It doesn’t matter how intense you are or what time of day it is.They’re the person you call about absolutely everything, so how else do you get their attention?

4. They're family.
Your parents want to kill them just as much as they want to kill you when either of you mess up. It doesn’t matter if it’s something personal for them or if they were your partner in crime. Your family cares about them.Your family already assumes your best friend will be present at any and every family event. They also assume that any extra ticket to anything will automatically go to them.

5. Their family is your family.
You can expect the same from their family. It’s no surprise to them when you walk through the front door. You can even count on their family “babysitting” you on a Sunday if your parents are busy. The family may even have a nickname for you.

6. You're real with each other.
It doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative, your best friend tells you like it is.They’ll be the first to tell you when you messed up, but they’re also one of the first to congratulate you for the things you do right. They tell you the truth.

7. They are always there for you.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a drunk call at 1 a.m. or a normal one in the middle of the day, they are always there to listen to your concerns or just to talk.

8. You know exactly what they're thinking and vice versa.
You don’t need to have a full-on conversation to know exactly what they’re thinking. With just a glance you both automatically know exactly what’s running through their head. It’s usually the same thing that you’re thinking.

9. You barge into each other's day no matter what's going on.
A “kidnap call” isn’t even a concern to you by now. You know that once a week you’ll get the “Drop what you’re doing. I’m picking you up now!” call. Sure, you need to ask your parents, but you and your best friend know that they’ll say yes anyway.

10. Distance means absolutely nothing.
Long distance is the biggest joke in your relationship. Phone calls, FaceTime and Skype exist so you know you will still be able to talk and “see” each other. They even help with creating the countdowns until you see each other. Additionally, nothing ever changes.

11. If you're happy, they're happy and vice versa.
Your smile puts an automatic smile on their face. The same goes for when they smile. They want to see you succeed and love to celebrate when you do. The same goes for them.

12. They will quite literally kill anyone who tries to hurt you.
Whether your best friend is a boy or a girl, anyone who hurts you should definitely feel threatened. They will always be there to tell an ex or anyone else, “If you mess with my friend again, you’ll have to go through me.” You feel protected around them.

13. You fight and make up in less than 20 minutes.
Fights are never serious because they never last long. It may take more than 20 minutes to cool off, but you know that you regret fighting five minutes after. Once things are settled, it's as if nothing even happened.

14. You trust them without hesitation.
It doesn’t matter if it’s about family, relationships or personal problems and secrets. You know that they will never tell a soul your private thoughts. It doesn’t matter how mad they get. Additionally, you can count on them making jokes about it or “using it for blackmail.” The blackmail is always between the two of you, of course, and is usually to make you laugh. They would never do it seriously.

15. You have thousands of inside jokes.
You have so many inside jokes that you don’t even remember the majority of them. You have to scroll down their wall on Facebook to see what type of things you have both laughed about. They may be a reminder, but usually you still don’t remember.

16. They always have ice cream or chocolate waiting for you during hard times.
Any problem you are having will be welcomed with ice cream or chocolate. It’s a must. They will either shove your head into an ice cream tub or throw chocolate eggs at you while yelling, “They make you happy because of the endorphins!” (It’s happened to me ...)

17. Going out is never the same without them.
You have such a good time going out that their absence makes it a completely different experience. Sure, you have your other friends, but they don’t understand what you want or feel with just a glance or tone. Additionally, who else is supposed to buy you drinks when they’re gone (other than creepy guys, of course)? Obviously you also have to buy drinks for them when you are together.

18. Sleep means nothing.
If you can’t sleep, you make sure that they don’t either. You could be studying for an exam or watching Netflix. If your eyes are open, you’ll annoy the heck out of them to make sure theirs are too.

19. There is not a doubt that they'll always be in your future.
You have both talked about the future. You know that you’ll be each other’s bridesmaids, that they’ll give you a wedding speech, and that someday, they’ll be one of your kids’ godparent. There is not a doubt in your mind that it’ll all happen someday.

20. You love them unconditionally.
You absolutely love them no matter what, even after all the laughs, tears, mistakes and celebrations. It doesn’t need to be said because you both already know. However, there are times where you like to tell each other anyways.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
