“His life will never be the one that he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve," Dan A. Turner, father to convicted rapist, Brock Turner, wrote in a letter to Judge Persky proposing probation instead of jail time. "That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”
20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.
20 minutes of abuse, both physical and mental, may never leave the mind of Turner's victim.
20 minutes of assault, on the body and on the soul, may continue to enslave her as long as she lives.
20 minutes of arrogance, in his choices and in his selfishness, cut her down to a body behind a dumpster.
A steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life?
More like a cheap price to pay for 20 minutes of infamy.
Here are 20 statistics by the numbers to remind us why Turner's sentence was a ratherlow price to pay compared to his victim's:
1. 94% of women who are sexually abused experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for two weeks following the incident.
2. While 30% of women experience those symptoms up to nine (or more) months following the rape. 3. Nearly 70% of sexual assault victims report moderate to severe distress, a larger reported percentage of distress than any other violent crime.4. 81% of women who were raped/stalked/physically harmed by an intimate partner reported both short-term and long-term effects.5. 1 out of every 6 women will be subjected to an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.
6. 2.8% have been threatened by unsuccessful attempts...7. ...And 14.8% have been victims of successful attempts.8. Rape crimes cost the United States $127 billion annually.9. That's more than any other U.S. crime spending (followed only by assault crimes at $93 billion)10. After the fact, victims pay (on average) $5,100 in out-of-pocketexpenses.
11. 63% of sexual assaults will never find their way into an official police report.
12. In fact, rape is regarded as the most under-reported crime in the United States.
13. Approximately 12% of female rape cases on college campuses are reported to law enforcement.
14. Nearly 80% of college female rapes remain unreported to police, while 67% of non-student rapes remain unreported to police.
15. 300,000 college women were raped in 2006 alone.
16. In 8 out of 10 sexual assault cases the victim and the attacker knew one another prior to the rape.17. 31.5 % of adult women who are raped suffer physical injuries. Only 35.6% of those who are injured, however, receive medical care.
18. 1.3 women (age 18 and over) in the United States are raped every 60 seconds. That adds up to 78 an hour, 1,871 per day, or 683,000 per year.
19. Weapons are used in 29% of attempted rapes.
20. Physical symptoms and illness have been associated with sexual abuse, including chronic pelvic pain, premenstrual syndrome, gastrointestinal disorders; these also include chronic pains such as headaches, back pains, and facial pains.
20 minutes for him. Potentially an entire lifetime for her.
I think he can pay that price just fine.
