Maine, the northernmost member of New England; home to lobster, moose, and a whole lot of snow. With the harsh winters, it's hard to see why anyone would ever want to be here. So, is summer in Maine any better?
The short answer is yes. Summer in Maine, specifically southern Maine, is wonderful. If you want the long answer, which includes why summer in southern Maine is great, keep reading.
1. The beaches
Maine has so many beautiful beaches! Blue water, nice sand, sunshine... what more could you want?
2. The sunsets
Because of Maine's unique coastline, you can still see sunsets over the water even though you're on the east coast!
3. Old Orchard
This is one of the most touristy areas of southern Maine. You have to go to the pier at least once while you're here.
4. Fireworks at Old Orchard
Every Thursday during the summer, you can check out a fireworks display at the Old Orchard pier!
5. Ice cream
This place is full of nice little ice cream shops, like the Dairy Stop in Saco and Fielder's Choice in Old Orchard.
6. Cascade Falls
Located in Saco, this neat little hiking trail leads you to a pretty cool waterfall! You can also find an abandoned bear cage here.
7. Becoming one with the moose
If you're lucky, you may see one without going too far north. It's just a Maine thing, I guess.
8. Lobstah
It is not lobstER, it is lobstAH. Everywhere you go you will find delicious lobster shacks.
9. Being a short drive from Acadia
This beautiful national park has everything; hiking mountains, rock climbing, beaches, and picnic areas.
10. Being a short drive from Bar Harbor
For the record, the name of this town is pronounced "Bah Hahbah" and it is filled with restaurants and shops and features some great water views!
11. Portland
This city has everything you could possibly want!
12. Sea Dog Games
Be sure to catch a game and try a famous Sea Dog Biscuit!
13. Holy Donut
Donuts made with potatoes, love, and happiness.
14. Portland Headlight
It's been said this is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the country, and it's easy to see why.
15. Freeport
This whole town is dedicated to shopping. You're not a true Mainer until you have a picture with the giant Bean Boot.
16. Kennebunkport
This is where the Bush family spends time. Who knows? Maybe you'll get to see the former presidents.
17. The Great Maine Lumberjack Show
You seriously can't make this stuff up. It's so Maine.
18. Being a short drive from Mt. Katahdin
At over 5,000 feet tall, this is the highest mountain in Maine!
19. Lenny, the 1000 pound chocolate moose
You can find him at Len Libby Candy Shop in Scarborough. He should be one of the Seven Wonders of the World, in all honesty.
20. Did I mention the sunsets on the beaches?
