20 Reasons I Love Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes"
Kicking the Seat

You know how I said in one of my earlier articles that I'm a huge nerd when it comes to "The Lord of the Rings"? Well, I may also be a huge nerd when it comes to "Sherlock Holmes" in any of his incarnations. From the brilliance of Basil Rathbone's performance as one of the first Sherlocks, to the cunning and well-written detective of the literary incarnation, and even to the consistently-frustrating BBC "Sherlock" series that I currently have a bone-deep love/hate relationship with (that's leaning more toward hate nowadays.) If it's Sherlock Holmes-related, you can bet that I'm partaking in it.

This obsession of mine actually began when I happened upon my parental units watching Guy Ritchie's 2009 action/mystery "Sherlock Holmes." I was immediately enthralled with everybody's performances, and the over-the-top action, while diverging spectacularly from the source material, spoke to my American soul in a way that nothing really has since I binged on 80's action flicks one summer. It was funny, action-filled, suspenseful, and suitably dramatic for my tastes.

And so, to convey my gratitude to Guy Ritchie and Co., I'm going to list the 20 reasons I have to love Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes."

1. The soundtrack gets you hyped: seriously hyped. That opening sequence makes me ready to chase someone down a cobblestone street in Victorian London.

2. The slo-mo fight scenes are boss. These are some of the best uses of slow motion I have ever seen in a movie.

3. John. Hamish. Watson.

4. Clarkie is an incredible man and we need to take care of him.

5. The set and costume designs are exceptional. As a Victorian-era geek, I can honestly say the anachronisms are pretty few when it comes to sets and costumes in this movie.

6. We can all identify with Sherlock.

7. Miss Mary Morstan: an exceptionally lovely badass.

8. It’s worth repeating: we can all identify with Sherlock.

9. Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood: A+ Casting.

10. “You have the grand gift of silence, Watson. It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.”

11. Fighting over the waistcoat in the hansom.

12. The mini-confrontation between Sherlock and Blackwood in the prison. Two analytical minds working to psych one another out just appeals to me.

13. The love of my life (next to Mary Morstan): Irene Adler.

14. “It’s a matter of professional integrity."

15. “Oh, Dredger!”

16. “Watson… What have you done?”

17. The supernatural portion of the plot is actually pretty creepy.

18. The visual effects are pretty solid.

19. The tone of the film switches beautifully from scene to scene. The humor is suitably humorous and not out of place, the creepy scenes are appropriately ambient and eerie, and minute effects tie everything neatly together.

20. And finally, the man himself: Sherlock Holmes.

Thank you, Guy Ritchie, for making one amazing movie that hits all of my good-time buttons, and for giving me one hell of an introduction to the Sherlock Holmes fandom! And special thanks to the cast and crew of the film, without whom the film would not be nearly as incredible as it is!

I got very pissed off at BBC Sherlock while making this list. If you'd like to see the rants resulting from getting the wrong Sherlock while searching for images, go ahead and check out my Twitter page. Who knows: we may be compatible.

And if you're interested in checking out some original writing projects I work on, check out this site. I'm currently working on a Choose Your Own Adventure novel on a large scale--regular updates will be posted there!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
