Since the 1890's, films have existed in some way, shape, or form. Though, they did not become what we know today until around 1927 when sound was welcomed.
From Beauty and the Beast to Guardians of the Galaxy 2, we are already expecting many movies to be released this year, but while we wait for the previews to end, let's consider the movies that are reaching their tenth birthday this year.
1. Alvin and the Chipmunks
While we have had three other movies come out from this franchise, the first movie was released in 2007.
This live-action film of a classic cartoon is about 3 chipmunks that, basically, make it big in the music industry with their high-pitch singing, later going through a sort of "break-up" with the man, Dave, that brought them there in the first place.
2. Transformers
Four more movies have joined this franchise since this movie was released.
Another popular cartoon turned live-action movie, starring Megan Fox and Shia LeBeouf, was about mechanical aliens that came to Earth and disguised themselves as automobiles. It comes to understanding that the "robots" are Autobots in a war with the nefarious Decepticons.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was released in 2003 with a sequel in 2006. World's End became the third movie in 2007, and there has been one more released in 2011, as well as one that comes out this year.
The story follows Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan in their quest to save Captain Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker that he had fallen into at the end of the previous movie, which ultimately lands the party in a battle between the classic pirate crew and Davy Jones following an issue with the goddess Calypso.
4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
This beloved movie series began in 2001 and continued on until 2011. With a separate story being introduced last year, it's never too late to celebrate the franchise, especially since its fifth installment was released 10 years ago.
This entry of the series focuses on Harry Potter's well-being after the return of Voldemort in the movie before and ends up being the link that the rest of the magical world needs to see that the Dark Lord is indeed back.
5. The Bourne Ultimatum
The Bourne Identity was released in 2002 with a sequel in 2004, leading up the third movie being released in 2007.
Jason Bourne is still trying to discover who he is and ends up travelling across the world in order to find out. However, he still has to escape those that want him neutralized before he can find out the truth.
6. Shrek the Third
With a total of 6 films, Shrek the Third and Shrek the Halls came out 6 years after the first movie in 2001.
Shrek the Third being the only one I was aware of between the two that are now ten years old was actually the last movie I ever saw of the franchise. When Fiona's father, King Harold, falls ill, Shrek has to go on an adventure to seek out the new heir. This brings him to rebellious Artie.
7. The Simpsons Movie
While many still enjoy both the TV show and movie, the movie is quite young compared to the show, which aired in December of 1989.
After Lisa Simpson causes the mass clean-up of Lake Springfield, Homer and his adopted pet Spider-pig manage to pollute the water all over again. As a reply, the EPA places a large dome over Springfield.
8. Ratatouille
This beloved movie about a rat becoming a chef in Paris was a favorite to both my sister and I. I remember pulling the movie out of my Christmas stocking, but I didn't realize that it was 10 years ago. (Now I feel old.)
9. Meet the Robinsons
This movie and Ratatouille were released around the same time because I remember my sister pulling this one out of her Christmas stocking. Now I feel very old and in need of watching these movies for nostalgia's sake.
When young orphan and genius inventor Lewis creates a machine that recalls lost memories, he winds up in the future where everything is colorful and, quite literally, full of bubbles. Here is where he meets the lovely Robinsons, a very large and fun family. Though, the happiness doesn't last when "Bowler Hat Guy" comes to ruin the day.
10. Bridge to Terabithia
The book was something I really loved as I child, and the movie was a masterpiece and still makes me cry to this day.
Jess (Josh Hutcherson) is a lonely boy that is bullied constantly and has to watch over his little sister wherever they go. One day, everything changes when new girl Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb) opens up her imagination to him, and they create their own world inside a forest. Sadly, there is a tragedy, but all becomes right in the end.
11. The Game Plan
10 years later and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson is still starring in movies. Most recently was his role as Maui in Moana, but this fun tale with costar Madison Pettis was certainly a movie with a fun script for all ages.
In simple terms, a football superstar discovers he has a daughter and learns to take care of her, learns to accept teamwork, and understands the love that he was lacking.
12. Bee Movie
If you were concerned over the influx of memes concerning this movie, its because it is officially 10 years old and, with the humor of the Internet today, is the perfect candidate for comedy.
Barry B. Benson could not wait for his life in the honey factory only to get lost in the human world! He befriends human Vanessa and becomes an advocate for bees' rights, which includes the right to their honey.
13. Hairspray
As we move away from cartoons, we have the musical Hairspray. While I considered this movie rather annoying, there's no denying its amusing tale and civil rights messages.
With a star studded cast focused around Tracy Turnblad, played by Nikki Blonsky, Tracy goes from finally becoming a dancer on her favorite show to getting involved in desegregation and a protest on civil rights.
14. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
This charming film is cute and funny but still discusses important issues.
Firefighters and best friends Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler) and Larry Valentine (Kevin James) get married when widower Larry gets scared for his children in the event of his death.
15. The Nanny Diaries
Before her majestic role as Black Widow in Marvel’s Avengers, Scarlett Johansson was cast in the Nanny Diaries as Annie Braddock, a college student taking on the job as nanny to the son of a dysfunctional couple in Manhattan.
16. The Bucket List
Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman star in this uplifting movie about two men discovering they have cancer before deciding to complete their "bucket list," a list of things they should do before they die.
My family still laughs and cries at this movie despite how many times we see it.
17. P.S. I Love You
This movie never fails to make my mother cry and would probably make me do the same if I ever saw the full movie. Now that it is having its birthday, perhaps it's the perfect excuse to sit down with some popcorn... and tissue.
Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler star in this movie as married couple Holly and Gerry, who have their fights but still love each other very much. After Gerry's rather sudden death, Holly discovers that her husband had scheduled messages to be delivered to her... all of which end in "I Love You."
18. I Am Legend
Played by Will Smith, Robert Neville is a scientist living in a barren New York City after a virus turned everyone into "bloodthirsty mutants." With his dog, the last member of his family, he will fight to find a cure.
19. Stephen King's The Mist
Well we all know that when we see Stephen King's name, it's probably going to be good.
David Drayton and his son find themselves trapped in a grocery store when a mist creeps into the town with strange creatures hiding inside.
20. Spider-Man 3
This year Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released, joining in the Avenger's franchise, but first we must pay tribute to the performance that elevated Toby Maguire to "meme-status."
In this third and final installment of Toby Maguire's Spider-Man, Peter Parker comes in contact with a strange black ooze that causes a great change in his personality and how he performs as Spider-Man... featuring relationship issues.
