20 Life Lessons In 20 Years

One lesson for every year of my life!

My 20th birthday is quickly approaching.

It is hard to believe that I have experienced 20 years of life. I am no longer going to be a teenager. With all this being said, I'm happy with the life I am living. I have certainly learned a lot. Sticking with the theme of '20', here are my 20 life lessons.

1.) You can't please everyone.

It's bound to happen. No matter what you do, someone will not be pleased or happy. So aim to make your happiness your top priority and stop worrying about others. (Side note: that doesn't mean screw society! You are allowed to care for other people)

2. We can't always have what we want.

The Rolling Stones said it themselves..."you can't always get what you want". (Side note: that song was wayyyy before my time...I had to look up to see who wrote it!). Sometimes we want something really bad but it was not written in the stars for us. We just gotta learn to accept it and move on!

3. The Earth does not revolve around you.

I hate to break it to you all, but the universe doesn't spin around you. We all share this planet!

4. It's ok to not know.

Not know what? Anything. Where something is, the right answer, even how you feel. Being unsure is a part of life. Let it happen

5. Don't take things for granted.

A lot of people...myself included, take lots of things for granted. Maybe it is the clothes we wear, the friends we have or the bed we sleep in. We all have to learn to not take things for granted because one day they might not be there anymore.

6. Mistakes will happen.

Nobody can be perfect. Things will go wrong. You will make a mistake or two. It's okay, it happens to the best of us.

7. You don't have to agree with everyone.

It's totally normal to have a different opinion than someone else. You are not wrong, nor are they, that is why it is called an opinion. You simply don't see eye to eye and that is fine.

8. People aren't meant to be in your life forever.

I know it seems really hard to lose that best friend of yours or your boyfriend or girlfriend but I promise you they were not meant to be in your life forever...hence why they left. It happens to everyone. You will be ok. It takes time to move on but it will happen. You will find even better people.

9. The past is in the past.

Things that have past cannot be changed, no matter how much we would like. It is behind us and the only thing we can do is reflect and learn from it.

10. It's ok to say no.

If you really don't want to go out, don't force yourself. Just say no. You'll be happier than being somewhere or doing something you don't enjoy.

11. Be honest.

No one likes a liar, just tell the truth.

12. Be kind.

No one likes a mean person! Being kind will get you further and will pay off.

13. Failure happens.

This goes back to the idea that no one is perfect and mistakes happen. Failure is natural, so don't think the world is over when you fail your math test.

14. Do the right thing.

Everyone likes a good person! This is just like the idea of being kind. Always do what you know is right, you will feel better in the end.

15. Live in the moment.

This also goes back to the idea of the past. This very moment right now will soon be a thing of the past and will be gone. Be present...it's much better.

16. Be respectful.

Respect everyone. It all goes back to the age old lesson we were taught when we were little; treat others how you would like to be treated.

17. Stay humble and grateful.

Again this goes back to the idea that what and who we have in our lives right now might not be here tomorrow. Be happy for what you have.

18. Be confident.

Confidence always shines through. If you think highly of yourself (and not in a bad way), others will be drawn to you. Confidence is SO important!!!

19. Have no regrets.

It's never fun to look back on something and say "I wish that I _____". Take a risk and go for it because you don't want to look back having wish you had done something!

20. Always love.

Love is something this world really needs. Love everyone. Your friends, your family, your neighbors, your enemies, and definitely yourself. More love, less hate. We have to love ourselves before we can let others in to love us. My main point is...always love yourself and your family and friends and basically everyone.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

Amidst my hectic college career, I always find time for one thing, even on the busiest weeks: Parks and Recreation. This show has made me laugh and has made me cry, but most of all I have related to this show more than I would like to admit.

Here are some "Parks and Rec" moments that relate to life struggles that just about everyone faces.

April Ludgate

April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation is notorious for her "I don't care" attitude. She speaks her mind without caring what anyone thinks of her. Fans love her because she isn't afraid to be herself. April can seem cold and negative, but she's really just fearless and strong-minded. And despite her sometimes harsh words, April truly cares about the people she's closest to. These are all reasons she is the epitome of a college student. April complains whenever she has to do any kind of work, but ends up doing the work anyway. April Ludgate is the ultimate college student spirit animal.

11 Ways To Live The Best Life You Can

Life is full of twists and turns, but you have to keep going.

Life is all about twist and turns, sideways and which ways. Nothing is permanent, so we should take risks, and chase our dreams. We are taught at a young age many lessons that will follow us into adulthood. What we aren't taught is how to feel, and how we handle those emotions. We just have to figure them out ourselves, and that's not fun. In my 21 years of living, I have come to know that way too many people can't handle emotions, or the fact that not everyone is dead inside like them. When you're like me, and you have zero control over your emotions, it's hard to feel comfortable around people who aren't so in touch with themselves. As much as I would like to feel nothing at times, I've accepted who I am and the fact that I can cry over practically nothing. So, there are some things in life that you just have to do.
