20 Lessons I Learned in 20 Years of Living

I learned these lessons the hard way and I grew from all of them.

Last week I broke out of my teenage years and finally turned 20! Woo! Now that I have lived twenty years of my life, I feel that I have knowledge to spread. So here are twenty things that I have learned throughout my life.

1. Stay positive

If you starting seeing the world in a negative way, then even the positive events in your life will start to seem more negative.

2. If someone doesn't matter to you, neither should their opinion.

Why waste time thinking about something that someone said? I don't know about you, but I have better thinks to think about.

3. Appreciate the small things.

The small things can make you happy when you least except it, so appreciate them.

4. Nothing is permanent.

Not the good things, nor the bad. So appreciate good things when their happening, and remember you're strong when bad things are happening.

5. It's not that hard to keep in touch with people you care about.

All it takes to keep in touch is a text or phone call to see how things are going. Being a part from my high school friends I've learned we don't need to talk everyday, but we still have each others backs.

6. Your past is fun to reminisce on, but it doesn't define you.

Just because you did something once, doesn't mean you have to do it again. You make the choice of whether it defines who you are today or not.

7. Celebrate every victory.

Even if it's something like getting an A on a test, or successfully making it through another semester of college, celebrate it!

8. Judge a guy by the size of is his vocabulary, not anything else.

Personality and brains count for so much more than looks.

9. A small group of close friends is better than a large group of acquaintances.

Having a lot of acquaintances can be good at times, but having three friends that you can tell anything to is better than having three hundred friends.

10. It doesn't matter how hard we fall, it matters that we have the strength to pick ourselves back up again.

Terrible things happen to everyone, but no one is going to get anywhere by crying or complaining about it.

11. Netflix is great, but the real excitement comes from getting out and living.

I know it's comfortable to lay around and watch Netflix all day, but the real adventure is outside of a computer screen.

12. No man can ever define you.

I am an independent person, so I could not be in a relationship with someone who's clingy, nor could I be super clingy in a relationship. I do not need to be in a relationship. I am now because my boyfriend makes me a better person and I do not want to go a day without seeing him.

13. Don't stay silent because you don't want to keep harmony.

I definitely had trouble with this, but I cannot stress this enough, SPEAK YOUR MIND! You have one for a reason and it helps no one to stay quiet.

14.Being mad is not going to solve problems.

People make mistakes and it's okay to be mad for a little while, but after a fit period of time, you have to get over it. Staying mad at someone for eating your sandwich is okay for a day, but after a year, there's no reason for it.

15. Nothing is going to be handed to you on a silver platter.

If you want to be successful in life, you're going to have to work for it.

16. If you like people, keep them in your life.

Like I said, it's easy to stay connected to people. If you enjoy someone's company, make plans with them.

17. People who start out shy, are the best people on the planet.

Trust me, I may seem shy at first, but I'm a really fun person. Sometimes people are shy because they are waiting to see if you're worth talking to.

18. First impressions are usually wrong.

No one can show their whole personality through one meeting, so don't judge people so harsh when you've just met them.

19. Trying to make healthier decisions early in life can make life easier if the future.

If you get use to a certain lifestyle, then you will continue that way. I was always jealous my cousins ran a lot when they were younger and I never got into running, but now I wish I had.

20. It's not the party you plan, it's the people.

There could be a thousand people at a party or there could be four people at a party, you will probably still talk to the same four people the majority of the party.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
