20 Things I Learned my First Two Years Of College

College goes by really fast. Somehow, I've already made it through two years, who let that happen? With so much happening all the time, it's sometimes hard to realize how much you've changed (I promise, changing is a good thing!) Here are some things that I learned after stumbling through the first half of my college experience

1. You're going to be homesick sometimes, but home is always just a FaceTime call away, and time moves surprisingly quickly, you'll be home again soon.

2. It's normal not to feel like you have a home sometimes, it's weird being home, it's weird being at school.

3. This feeling is normal, and everyone around you is also experiencing it, despite appearances.

4. Your mom becomes your best friend when you're not at home to bicker all the time.

5. You really start to get the hang of campus, knowing what times are busy, which places to avoid, which classes can be scheduled back to back, and when you function the best in class and when you should schedule your breaks.

6. Getting through lower div prereqs is kind of annoying, but so worth it when you get to what you're interested in.

7. 8 a.m.'s are as hard as everyone tells you they'll be.

8. But sometimes, they're unavoidable and you just push through it, with the help of a couple cups of coffee.

9. It seems like everyone everywhere is doing a lot, but focus on what you can handle and what will make you happy.

10. It's easy to over commit yourself and try to take on too much, just be involved in a couple things and devote yourself to them.

11. Cooking isn't as hard as you think, but it's going to be a while before you're as good as your parents.

12. Going grocery shopping on your own is fun until you get home and realize you have a bunch of random ingredients that can't really form a meal.

13. Sometimes, you're going to have $10 to your name, no matter how much you thought you budgeted, and laying on your bed and crying until your next paycheck is free.

14. Sometimes, you might have a bad test, but you don't need to let it get you down, most things are recoverable, and a lot of professors love to see a trend of improvement.

15. You're still young, and you're going to make a lot of mistakes, feeling like you're drowning sometimes is normal, but I promise you're not and things will continue like they're supposed to.

16. Office hours are actually pretty helpful when you can drag yourself to them.

17. The friends you make in college are some of the best friends you'll ever have.

18. But the friends you keep from home are still really special to you, and your No. 1 support system.

19. It's okay to still not really have a definitive plan for the future, you don't have to know exactly what you want to do.

20. College goes by super fast! Two years can pass by in what feels like the blink of an eye. How am I halfway done?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
