Turning 20 is one of the most un-exciting birthdays that has come up so far. You're no longer a teenager, but you're also still without all of the benefits that being 21 brings.
Here are a few facts you've realized now that year 20 is upon you.
1. You have been roaming this earth for two decades now. Two decades.
2. You can only be on your parents’ health insurance for six more years.
3. That means you eventually need to find a good job or career.
4. But wait. You don’t know what you want to do with your life.
5. Just kidding, you know exactly what you want to do. You have it all figured out!
6. Never mind, that passed. Back to not knowing what you want to do.
7. This is the most awkward age, because you're young enough to be doing teenaged activities anymore, but you aren’t 21, so you can’t go out and be an adult. So what do you do?
8. You want to be independent. You want to be able to take care of yourself, make your own money, buy your own things and handle situations on your own.
9. At the same time, you just want to be curled up with your mom under a blanket while your dad goes out and gets Chinese food. Being an adult is not as glamorous and people make it seem.
10. People start referring to your house as “your parents’ house.” Wait! Just because I live at school doesn’t mean it’s not my house anymore!
11. If you live to be 80, you've already completed a quarter of your life.
12. Most of the past 20 years were spent in school. And yet, you keep going.
13. You have spent all of this time in school learning, and yet, you still don’t know how to cook, do your taxes, fix anything related to your apartment or your car, or handle most of life’s everyday situations.
14. No one ever thinks you look like you’re 20. It’s either “You look like you’re 23” or “You look like you’re 17.”
15. You're still having difficulties prioritizing. Netflix is the main culprit of your issues. Watch another episode or clean the refrigerator..?
16. You know you're almost to the point where another birthday is not necessarily a good thing anymore.
17. You've realized that this is the time when you find out who your true friends are. Friendships either make it or break it at this time in your life, because you're all finding out who you are: And that’s okay.
18. People are crazy, as you've come to find out. But part of finding who you are at this time revolves around how you interact with others.
19. You know that you can be a pessimist when considering all of the different scenarios happening around you. You can be overwhelmed by the hectic nature of it all, and spend your time as a young twenty-something miserable while trying to make it through.
20. You also know that you can be an optimist, and see these next few years as a great opportunity. This can be the opportunity to try everything you've always wanted to try, see places you've longed to see, and to find the person that you truly are.
Enjoy your 20th year while it lasts. After all, you're only young once. And just remember, 21 is right around the corner.
