After fifteen long weeks of hard work, sleep deprivation, and never ending stress, the time has finally come: the end of the semester. As someone who couldn’t be happier about the last week of the semester, not counting finals week, I have reflected on all of the things that I will miss about college life while I enjoy my break. My friends, my classes, my professors, feeling like I have a purpose in life by gaining an education and moving a step closer to my ultimate goal. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ll even miss the campus food! All the amazing things to be missed aside, there is still a never-ending list of things that I will not miss during my month off. For now, here are twenty things that I will not even remotely miss during the upcoming break!

  1. Apologizing to my bed every morning for leaving it at 5am.
  2. Putting on makeup everyday and getting dressed.
  3. The morning commute.
  4. Having to socialize with classmates I know I won’t associate with next semester.
  5. Having my schedule completely clash with those of my best friends.
  6. Having to respond to “Can you meet up today?” texts with, “Sorry, too busy studying!”
  7. BlackBoard. Enough said.
  8. Connect assignments.
  9. 11:59pm deadlines. I’m definitely not going to miss those.
  10. Actively resisting f’real milkshakes; admit it, those things are the definition of heaven on Earth.
  11. Midterm exams. Final exams. Any kind of exam will not be missed.
  12. Three hour breaks.
  13. Listening to a million Spotify ads while doing homework. There’s nothing worse than readingThe Fall of the House of Usher while listening to a GEICO commercial, especially when you can’t focus on homework without music.
  14. Having random guys approach me and pry for personal information even though I’ve expressed your lack of interest. Seriously, walk away.
  15. Walking around campus in the rain.
  16. Group projects.
  17. Public Speaking. 9am is too early for me to even think a coherent thought, let alone present one to the entire class.
  18. Being weeks behind on my favorite shows because of the workload. Winter Break means binging on all of my favorite shows and catching up!
  19. Coming to campus only to realize my class has been cancelled. In hindsight, checking my email before I leave the house is probably a good idea.
  20. Having the current state of my life be perfectly described by Evil Kermit memes. Relatable memes make up 99% of my camera roll, no shame.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
