2 Birds, 1 Bomb

A modest proposal for a sustainable future

We live in a world plagued by many problems. Overpopulation, war, terrorism, famine and poverty, to name a few. These are all problems that are considered serious enough that they warrant countless hours of debate in legislative bodies across the globe, as well as the passage of resolutions by the United Nations. All of these have resulted in some success, however, it is difficult to be certain if these policies will work in the long-term. Some argue that they do not need to work in the long term, only for the next few decades. Keeping this in mind, I believe that there is a way we can combat a lot of these, like overpopulation, terrorism and poverty at the same time.

Overpopulation is a problem that affects every person on this planet. It reduces the per capita resources that are available to the average human. It forces us to spread Earth's resources thinner than we would like to, and this is unsustainable as the human population continues to grow while our resources are finite. The countries with the biggest populations, India, China, Brazil, among others also happen to be the poorest,(or have 1 percent of the population with over 80 percent of the wealth) and this not is a coincidence, but a trend.

Extreme poverty combined with high illiteracy rates also breeds crime. This adds even more strain on already scarce resources. In the US alone, crime costs over $200 billion. This makes for a very unfair and unsustainable picture. The poor are not only demanding valuable resources that could be better utilized, but also costing more and more per capita. This needs to stop. Fortunately for us, there is one solution to all our problems. This solution will not only reduce poverty and crime, but in doing so free up resources that can be better utilized to further humanity.

While the solution is simple, it is hard to understand, and this is just part of the nature of the solution. The reason a solution so far had not been found was because people looked at crime, overpopulation, terrorism and poverty as separate problems. They failed to see that all of society's problems were inter-connected. And therein lies the genius of the solution. By affecting just one key part, overpopulation, it helps fix all of the overlying problems. The solution -- lessen the global population by bombing high-density poverty-ridden parts of the globe.

While this option might seem drastic at first, it does not take Einstein to work out the limitless benefits to this approach. Crime breeds in these pockets of our world: cities like Mumbai, Rio, Detroit, Lagos, Ciudad Juárez, Caracas, Baghdad and Damascas have some of the highest crime rates fueled by extreme poverty and illiteracy. These people are not only utilizing valuable resources, but also have no regard for others or each other as they frequent in cartels and light up streets with gang wars. Recently, a popular American celebrity star mentioned how effective such measures were less than a decade ago in the Middle East. Granted, those measures were more controlled but were extremely efficient. They helped reduce crime drastically and contributed to stabilizing the hierarchy, therefore ensuring the region did not descend into chaos.

While chemical weapons were used extensively in order to control the terrorists in the Middle East, they tend to be hard to control unless special chambers are built and people are ferried there. This makes this plan very expensive and not worth the net savings on resources. Also, the chemicals might wander into more desirable populations which could have an adverse effect on our society.

A better solution is the ATIPB, or Aviation Thermobaric Bomb of Increased Power, lovingly called Father of All Bombs. developed by the Russian military as an alternative to nuclear weapons, it is perfect for our noble cause. It does not cause damage outside it's blast radius, and can be substituted with the U.S. made GBU-34, or Mother of All Bombs. Both of these bombs can be used with surgical precision. In large undesirable areas swamped with poverty and terrorism like the Middle East and Africa, we can take this a step further and use nuclear weapons.

The biggest downside to using nuclear weapons is the radiation. However, since we are using them in undesirable areas where entire populations are a strain on world resources, this will ensure their complete and utter eradication. While it might render the land unusable, it should be noted that most of that land is useless to humanity due to topsoil erosion. Also, some of these areas like Afghanistan are huge producers of illegal drugs like opium. This will also help the fight against drugs and help reduce crime.

Such actions should not be limited to Asia and Africa. As notable people have pointed out, even here in North America, there are societies that flourish that aim only to harm others. Many suggestions, like building a wall, have been considered. However, such a wall that would effectively help the situation and not end up being a liability itself would be too expensive. Using nuclear weapons and FOABs are much more cost-efficient and would help to get rid of the problem, rather than just delaying the inevitable: destruction of civil society. It might not happen today, it might not happen tomorrow, but will happen soon. If the world keeps ignoring these catastrophic problems any longer, we will not be left with anything to protect.

I know many of you will still be unconvinced. People will think that this is just too bold a step to take, that we should wait it out. But that logic has a fundamental flaw: we have been waiting it out for many years now, hoping that the populations will sort their mess and start contributing to humanity at a meaningful level. However, it has only gotten worse. Terrorism stands at an all-time high, and it is destabilizing useful contributing populations in countries like France and Belgium. This is leading to a negative net rate of progress towards ensuring our species's survival.

We need to unite now, and stand firm. To make this decision not for us, but for the future of humanity. To ensure that we get to reach our potential as a species and that we do end up being our own downfall. We need to do this for the greater good. We must be merciless, we must be ruthless. After all, this is only for all of Humanity and Planet Earth.

Disclaimer: This article is strictly satirical in nature. It is not meant to be taken literally. I do not, again, do not, condone bombing of any nature to any purpose. The article draws inspiration from "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift, and may run parallel to some ideas and styles expressed by Swift. (I humbly believe that comparing my work to his work would be insulting him and would therefore discourage the reader to do so.) Using nuclear bombs to end the drug war has been proposed in a crime fiction series by Alex Rider.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
