19 Things I Want To Do In My 19th Year

"Be in a relationship...This isn't super important to me, but it's something that I wouldn't mind happening."

I'm turning 19 at the end of this month, so I started thinking about what I want to do in this upcoming year. Some are a stretch, others are highly realistic. Regardless, here is a list of things I would like to do in the year(ish) of my 19th year.

1. Sky Dive

Honestly, this wasn't ever really something I'd ever thought about, but one of my friends told me she wanted to skydive for her 20th and I said I would go with her, so I'm committing to it, and it will happen during my 19th year.

2. New York City

My parents are trying to plan a trip to New York City for some time in the fall, and I couldn't be more excited. I've officially decided that I'm going there after college, but I guess visiting it first would be a good idea.

3. See A Broadway Show

Speaking of New York, seeing an actual show on Broadway is next on my list. I’m a major theatre nerd, and I will proudly claim that. I even want to work in theatre after I graduate, so it makes sense to want to see a show on Broadway while in New York.

4. Get An Off-Campus Job

Having an on-campus job is great! I love having that job, but I’ve never had a “real” job. I’ve babysat, worked for my grandparents, had a paid apprenticeship, but never worked retail or in a restaurant or anything like that. Not saying I necessarily want one, but I should probably get one.

5. Work In Tucker Theatre

Going back to work, I want to get more involved with the theatre program at Middle Tennessee State. Officially deciding on a theatre minor and not working with the theatre at all seems counter-productive to each other.

6. Be In A Relationship

I’ve never been one of those girls that was like “I have to have a boyfriend!!!” but I’m almost 19 and I’ve never been in a relationship. This isn’t super important to me, but it is something that I wouldn’t mind happening. In my opinion, relationships are a huge part of growing and learning about yourself.

7. Fly In An Airplane

I guess this should really be titled “Travel More” because there are so many places I haven’t been to that I really want to see – even just within the United States. Traveling via planes and airports and such is exciting to me. The most traveling I’ve done was to Hawaii, but my dad used to travel for work all the time and he’s been to some crazy, insane, amazing places. I want to be able to say I’ve been to my own crazy, insane, amazing places, as well.

8. Go To California

For a while, it was California that I was heading to after college, not New York. But that doesn’t mean California isn’t still on list of places to go. My roommate is from there and she’s always talking about the places she would show me if I ever got out there, so maybe it’ll happen this year.

9. Get An Apartment Or House

Adult things!! For our second year of college, my roommate and I are living on campus again. However, we already know who are roommates for junior year are. The four of us want to live in a house that year, so maybe we can find our new home before I turn 20 next summer.

10. Dean's List

Two semesters of this college thing, done. I made the grades, but I know they could’ve been so much better. Two more semesters coming up in this 19th year of my life, maybe I’ll make the Dean’s List for one of them.

11. Candidacy

The best way I explain this to people is by comparing it to nursing majors. They do their pre-requisites, and then have to apply for nursing school. That’s kind of the same thing with the Recording Industry program at MTSU, and I’ll be able to apply in the fall.

12, 13, 14: Omega Delta Psi Related Goals

In July, applications for chair positions within my business fraternity will go out. I’m planning on running for the position of fraternal affairs with one of my friends. With this position, I hope to get to know the fraternity and its members better, as well as become more involved with the fraternity. In the fall, I am hoping to put on a panel through Omega Delta Psi about theatre sound, which is what I have a major interest and focus in. During the spring semester of the 2017-2018 school year, ODP will be attending Folk Alliance International, and I am hoping to be chosen to go for a second time.

15. Red Mountain Theatre Company Apprenticeship

This summer, I was lucky enough to receive a sound apprenticeship with a theatre company in Birmingham, my hometown. I’ve been with the company for a little over a week now, and I’ve already learned so much from everyone I’ve met. This apprenticeship has affirmed for me that this is the world I want to be in. My hope is to be lucky enough to work with this company again next year.

16. Find A Little

While Omega Delta Psi isn’t like other Greek life, we do have Bigs and Littles within our Phamily. This past semester, I didn’t really have a connection with anyone well enough to have found my Little, but maybe in the upcoming semesters, I will.

17. Adopt A Ferret

I mean, look at it *heart eyes*

18. Surf Again In Hawaii

This one’s a bit of a stretch, but a girl can dream, can’t see?

19. Plan (And Go On) A Fall/Christmas/Spring Break Trip With My College Friends

We always kind of joked about it, but I know if we actually try and plan, we can make something happen.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
