19 Things I've Learned in 19 Years

I can't believe it took me this long either...

19 Things I've Learned in 19 Years
Emma Jinno

We all have birthdays every year and have huge birthday parties to celebrate the fact that we've aged another year, but let's be honest, we didn't always age mentally. Well, I just turned 19 this past Wednesday and thought I would share 19 things that I have learned during that time

1. You should just do the readings for the classes. Yeah, yeah I know, you can't believe it took me 19 years to finally get around to doing the class readings, but I'm FINALLY doing them and now I'm a lot less lost in class.

2. NEVER, EVER skip skin routines! Just like you, it wants some stability and consistency in life!! Help a girl out!

3. It might take a hot sec to find your favorite friends. There's almost 7.2 BILLION people, your soulmate friends are around, I promise!

4. Your mom was probably right... About literally everything, especially when she told you to put that jacket on before leaving because it was going to be cold out.

5. John Mayer might have been a bit of a douchebag in the past, but you wont be able to stop yourself from loving his songs so you might as well stop trying now...

6. MAC has a recycling program that lets you get a free lip gloss if you bring back six empty cases of MAC beauty products to any of their stores. (Hella useful, I know)

7. Wear literally anything you want. When you're working and have to act all serious because you're an "adult", you wont be able to wear those ripped jean shorts, converse, and your college hoodie out in public.

8. Take TONS of pictures! No matter how ugly or how cute, no one said you had to Instagram them, but you should definitely take them! Think about all the possible #tbt's you could post later in life!

9. Eat dessert every opportunity you can! This one, I've always known, but I thought I would share.

10. When you're sick, you're EXPECTED to stay home and lay around watching T.V.. Just let it be, you'll be up and about in a week, no matter how dreadful it seems.

11. You can never have enough pairs of sunglasses!

12. ALWAYS sing. Blast the music so you can't hear yourself first, but sing it out.

13. Get your license A.K.A. freedom ASAP!

14. There's never a reason you should have to go out instead of cuddling a cozy blanket and a hot chocolate and a classic chick flick (personally, I like Friends with Benefits, and the Zac Efron of comfy blankets are sold at Brooke Stone).

15. Remember to stress a little less than you usually do, you're never going to look bad and be glad you used all of that energy focusing on details instead of getting work done or taking a break and relaxing.

16. Follow Chrissey Teigen's Twitter. Definitely a really good investment of your time.

17. Spend time with people. You're going to be here for a while so you might as well get to know some people while you're around.

18. That it's actually not illegal to have the lights on in the car while someone is driving, just really annoying. #ThanksMom

19. And last but finally not least, that I am clearly not done learning... Only 19 things in 19 years seems really sad and concerning I know, but I learned that I hate the way Tide Pods explode and stick on clothes yesterday so that at least makes 20!

I hope you enjoyed my 19 year long journey, HMU with yours. :)

Until next time,

Emma

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
