If you and your best friend are planning on going to college and living in the same room together, you might have heard the audible gasps from adults as they sit you down to tell you that no good can come from living with someone you have basically known your whole life. Granted, sometimes personalities clash, and sometimes best friends are not meant to live together. But every so often, you get the joy of getting along with your best friend enough to live with her for multiple years.
Living with a best friend is enough of an adventure to have its own reality show, and this is what you can expect.
1. You learn how to share groceries.
You may try to keep things separate at first, but really, this isn't going to last long. Also, grocery shopping is a hilarious adventure.
2. You know her schedule by heart.
Yes, this is very creepy but when you've lived with the same person for multiple years it just kind of happens.
3. You get concerned when she's not home by the time that you KNOW she's out of class by on Tuesdays.
And you will promptly text or call her until she answers you to say that she's just getting coffee. Whew!
4. You won't go to the library without double- and triple-checking to see if she wants to join.
And if she doesn't want to join, you will probably just skip the library for the night and watch Netflix with your roomie instead.
5. You share closets and probably don't even ask to borrow things anymore.
I've lived with my roommate for two years now, and we don't get any more formal than a "Hey, I took those high-waisted shorts of yours for the night."
6. She is always there for movie nights.
And you both probably visit the $5 movie bin at Walmart every time you go.
7. She supports you when you eat ice cream for dinner ... three nights in a row.
Even when she's eating a real meal made out of real things.
8. You text each other even when you're both home.
Mainly to say things like "Did you hear that noise? Someone probably just broke in, what do we do?"
9. Chores become something "we" need to do. Dishes, cleaning, taking out trash ...
Even if there are only three dishes in the sink, you'll both wait to do them together, because having your best friend there with loud music and a singing marathon makes all the sucky chores better.
10. You can't remember the last time that you went out on a weekend without her.
She's your best friend, and it just doesn't feel right to hit the town without her. I can count on one hand how many times I've gone out without my roomie/best friend, and I've made it through two years of college.
11. She listens to your endless rants about your major or job or life.
You both know all of each other's coworkers although you've never met them, you know how awful each other's classes are although you're both in different majors ... You get the point.
12. You have inside jokes. A lot of inside jokes.
Like ... way too many.
13. You become synonymous.
I mean in the way that you have all of the same friends, and you both will get disturbed if you run in to a friend that only one of you knows.
14. You learn not to judge.
Because for every crazy thing she's done or weird boy she's talked to, you know that she's seen you do twice as much and talk to twice as many.
15. You don't want to deal with ever getting another roommate.
But you come to grips with reality because you actually can't live with your best friend forever ... Even though you REALLY want to.
16. "What would I do if you moved away?"
First off, don't talk about it. Second off, you would just text her even more and make plans to go see her, wherever she is. (Unless you're my roommate, who is moving to Texas so now we have to talk about it and make plans to see each other. BRB, crying.)
17. Heart-to-hearts come in the form of long walks home from the bars and driving around to do errands.
All the time is a great time to pour your heart out about life.
18. You learn what a true best friend is.
You have both seen each other at your absolute worst and best. She has walked you home, and you've spent countless hours in the library with her. She has heard you whine about boys you've gotten over by the next day and stress out over bad test grades. She has literally been there for you during all of the stressful college moments.
19. It's like living with your boyfriend or girlfriend, but better.
It's all the fun of living with one of your favorite people, without all of the pressure of worrying about judgement like a relationship.
