I have been dubbed a "McCort Kid" for spending four years of my life at Bishop McCort Catholic high school, and no I would not trade them for anything. McCort Kids are notorious for wearing Oxford shirts and khakis, always with a belt! Since the hospital was just up the street, we would go to the hospital cafeteria for lunch on half days. We have an awesome tradition of celebrating St. Patrick's Day with an all-school mass, T-shirts, and cookies and ice cream at lunch in memory of our late teacher, Paul Hollern. Now that it's been almost a year since I wore my gold cap and gown, I thought I would ask a few questions I always had about my dear Catholic High School.
1. Why do Sperry Top Siders look good on everyone?
These boat shoes aren't an official part of McCort's school uniform, but they complement it so well!
2. Do you still use the McVan for field trips, school-sponsored activities, and the like?
I remember traveling in that van to teach Junior Achievement classes at one of the parochial elementary schools.
3. Why is Homecoming Week so awesome?
Everyone just has a little more school spirit on Character Day and Extreme Red and Gold Day.
5. Why do we have the best student section in town?
Is it the cheers? The themes? The band? The Alma Mater? Whatever it is, keep it up!
6. Why are the Parfaits at lunch sooooo good?
They're literally just pudding and Oreos, but they're worth the $1.50.
7. Can you serve Chinese Chicken for lunch more often?
For real though, I had Chinese chicken only like three times my senior year.
8. Who determined which stairs were the "up" stairs and which stairs were the "down" stairs?
Something that's been on my mind lately.
9. How did they determine which stairs were the "up" stairs and which stairs were the "down" stairs?
Just curious!
10. Why is the Alma Mater so poetic?
"When twilight shades invite memories of our own, then every thought of mine turns to all my friends. Others fade from my sight. The years are passing by, but pal of mine, dear Catholic High School, I'll never forget you!"
11. Were there ever any explosions in the chem lab?
I heard there was a small fire my freshman year, but did anyone ever blow anything up?
12. Do you still have the dodgeball tournament during midterms week?
Even I thought it was fun, and I'm not much of a sports person!
13. Was McCort built before or after Randy's Bilo was built next door?
And was it built there on purpose so the students could grab iced tea and peperoni rolls for musical rehearsal?
14. Speaking of musicals, why don't we have cushions on the seats in the auditorium?
I have literally been asking that since my freshman year, and my whole senior year I swore that when I made my first million I would finally buy some cushions for those seats.
15. How do we learn everybody's name in the whole school?
You know how they say everyone knows everyone in small schools? Well, they're not wrong.
16. Why do red and gold look so good together?
It's like peanut butter and jelly. Red and gold just belong together!
17. How do we have fun even when earning our service hours?
My friends and I would wake up at five in the morning to work the NHS blood drive all day. We would stay up all night and dance at miniTHON #forthekids. We would spend a chilly Saturday morning in December at Breakfast with Santa. We were required to turn in service hours every semester, but serving just felt like fun to us!
18. How do four years fly by so fast?
"Through these short high school years, we knew joys and fears. You shared with me my joys, lightened all my fears. Each year knits close the ties of friendships treasured yet, but pal of mine, dear Catholic High School, I'll never forget you!"
