The 1980s: Ronald Reagan was president, M*A*S*H aired its last episode, MTV debuted, and the Berlin Wall fell. It was a huge time for sports, medicine, politics, and entertainment. Movies were becoming increasingly popular and taking on different genres. Many classic films were born in this decade from directors such as John Hughes, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and Richard Donner. 1. "Caddyshack" (1980)
A golf club welcomes an eccentric new member (Rodney Dangerfield) while caddy Danny (Michael O'Keefe) receives advice from a golfer (Chevy Chase) and raises money for college. Groundskeeper (Bill Murray) tries to eliminate a troublesome (and dancing) gopher.
2. "The Shining" (1980)
A family heads to an isolated hotel with a spiritual presence for the winter where Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes violent and his son Danny (Danny Lloyd) possesses psychic ability known as the Shining. A novel by Stephen King turned into a classic thriller.
3. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981)
Archaeology professor Henry "Indiana" Jones (Harrison Ford) is hired by the U.S. government in 1936 to find the Ark of the Covenant, which can hold the key to human existence before it falls into the hands of the Nazis.
4. "Blade Runner" (1982)
This sci-fi takes place in the futuristic 2019 metropolis of Los Angles where Rick (Harrison Ford) is a blade runner who assassinates androids disguised as humans that commit crimes.
5. "Scarface" (1983)
Tony Montana (Al Pachino) manages to leave Cuba and starts working at a drug cartel in Miami, succumbing to greed and violence. And then "say hello to my little friend" is born.
6. "Sixteen Candles" (1984)
Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) has a crush on Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling), the most popular guy in school and her family forgot her 16th birthday in the midst of her sister's wedding. It's a great coming of age film.
7. "The Karate Kid" (1984)
Danny (Ralph Macchio) and his mom move out to California from Jersey where he meets Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), who teaches him karate. Painting fences and waxing cars apparently improve karate skill.
8. "Ghostbusters" (1984)
Some odd ball scientists (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis) and a guy looking for a good paying gig (Ernie Hudson) team up to take down ghosts in New York City. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!
9. "The Terminator" (1984)
A cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is sent from 2029 with the mission of killing a young woman (Linda Hamilton), who is of extreme significance in the future. Soldier Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) is sent to protect her from the machine disguised as man.
10. "Back to the Future" (1985)
Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and must help his parents get together in order to get back to 1985.
11. "The Breakfast Club" (1985)
A jock (Emilio Estevez), princess (Molly Ringwald), brain (Anthony Micheal Hall), basket case (Ally Sheedy), and criminal (Judd Nelson) meet in detention on a Saturday and find out they have a lot more in common than they taught.
12. "The Goonies" (1985)
A group of misfits that call themselves The Goonies follow a treasure map to find One-Eyed Willie's fortune to save their home from foreclosure. Cue the Truffle Shuffle and remember that Goonies never say die!
13. "Pretty in Pink" (1986)
Not so popular Andie (Molly Ringwald) works at a record store and is caught in a love triangle with rich, popular Blane (Andrew McCarthy) and her sweetheart best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer). Who will take her to the prom??
14. "Top Gun" (1986)
Maverick (Tom Cruise) and his partner Goose (Anthony Edwards) compete with Iceman (Val Kilmer) and his partner to be the best pilots as students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school. It's a danger zone.
15. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986)
Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is determined to have a day off from high school with his friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend Slone (Mia Sara) in Chicago and has a sophisticated plan to pull it off.
16. "Can't Buy Me Love" (1987)
Nerdy Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) makes a thousand dollar deal with cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) to be his girlfriend for a month as his ticket to the popular clique.
17. "The Princess Bride" (1987)
A grandfather reads the story of The Princess Bride to his sick grandson. Buttercup (Robin Wright) is engaged to be married but loves farmhand Westley (Cary Elwes) and is kidnapped. It is up to Westley to be witty and strong on his quest and encounters to save her.
18. "Dirty Dancing" (1987)
Johnny (Patrick Swayze) coins "nobody puts Baby (Jennifer Grey) in a corner" in this romantic drama full of dancing and secrets at an upstate New York summer resort in 1963.
19. "Dead Poets Society" (1989)
Professor John Keating (Robin Williams) teaches students like Todd Anderson (Ethan Hawke) that "no matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world" at the Welton Academy. Carpe diem indeed.
